School Raps McCain For Using Image As Speech Backdrop Without Permission
School Raps McCain For Using Image As Speech Backdrop Without Permission
By Kate Klonick - September 5, 2008, 4:32PM

Okay, the McCain-Walter Reed Middle School backdrop debacle is getting weirder by the second. Now the principal of the school is hammering McCain for using footage of the school during his convention speech without seeking the school's permission.

Here's the statement from Donna Tobin, the principal...

"It has been brought to the school's attention that a picture of the front of our school, Walter Reed Middle School, was used as a backdrop at the Republican National Convention. Permission to use the front of our school for the Republican National Convention was not given by our school nor is the use of our school's picture an endorsement of any political party or view."

One other interesting development: The California Democratic Party is actually holding a press conference in front of the school within minutes, where Dems will hit McCain for not knowing the difference between the school and Walter Reed Medical Center, which is believed to be the backdrop the McCain campaign really wanted.

33. Brown water swirling around his head. It looked like an unflushed toilet bowl.
The entire backdrop was a photo of the NYC skyline seen from the bay, but the geniuses who put it together didn't realize that all TV viewers would see was Rudy's head in shit.

23. Understand Republican psychology.
The higher ups in the organization who ordered someone to find a Walter Reed photo wasn't stupid. He was shameless in pandering to the same vets they've been stabbing in the back at Walter Reed, but he probably wasn't stupid. He was simply too smug and too lazy to have that image double checked.

The goober he delegated the image search job to isn't stupid either. He was simply not happy having to do grunt work when probably he'd joined the Republican PR firm hoping for more glamorous work--maybe hoping to be the next Karl Rove.

This isn't stupidity at work. It's laziness and hubris that does Republicans in.

34. Remember the "green jello and cottage cheeze" backdrop of June 3, 2008?
<snip>

"Many of us laughed last night when McCain appeared on stage in front of a lime Jell-o green background because we remembered the night of June 3 (one of the biggest Internet traffic nights of the campaign, when Obama clinched the Democratic nomination and McCain gave a doddering counter-speech from Kenner, Louisiana). His handlers had unveiled a new campaign slogan and color scheme, as seen in this photo:.."

If that's true about intending to actually use Walter Reed Medical Center, that is just not going to go over well for McCain's "judgement".

then this.

15. Except...I'm dealing with a husband who never gets info. off the internet.
He's a cable news junkie...and this stuff simply isn't out getting reported. My husband actually believes the polls are tied right now 42/42. SIGH! I'm pretty sure my husband represents the typical voter.

Those of us who depend upon the internet for the latest breaking news are far better informed than the general public (voters). Unless these stories of the botched "Walter Reed" photo/Heart demand to stop using "Barracuda"/etc. make it to a main stream news source...My husband will continue to believe I'm a wacko and that McCain is actually dead even with Barack right now.

16. Ooooooo, Baracuda!
Yes it's funny how stupid they are. But a school is public property. You don't need the school's permission any more than you need the National Park Service's permission to use the Washington Monument. The Democrats holding their press conference in front of the school will be indirectly making exactly that point.

31. Odd response from the school.
Sure the McCain campaign is a bunch of screw-ups. But still, you'd think a public school would be smarter to remain mute on the subject or laugh about it, not make some blustery political disclaimer as if anyone really thought they were in the McCain camp.

After their series of using stolen songs and images without permission, I hear through the grapevine that their next song will be "Well, I take whatever I want." Image of candidates accompanying the next line of the song is left to your imagination.
