Interesting quote from P*lin I just read
Talking about her time as mayor of Wasilla, she reportedly said "It's not rocket science - it's $6 million and 53 people."

Well, I was once an employee of a smallish IT department at a very large bank. Our departmental budget hovered around $5 million, and we were about 40-45 people. Our department manager, while a very nice person, lived in the space between clueless and hare-brained; she promoted and gave raises to her minions, and was deathly afraid of anybody who knew more about her job than she did (which was most of the department). I wouldn't trust her with my dry cleaning. The department was eventually disbanded, but she was able to keep her job because of the people she knew and the title she held.

Kind of puts P*lin's comment in perspective for me.

2. I guess I am missing something
why is there a parallel between palin and this female you used to work for. Because the budgets were approximately the same and the staff was about the same size and because both were women?

5. I think it's the dismissive attitude...
Incompetent people don't realize they're incompetent, which is what keeps them incompetent.

Palin said being mayor "isn't rocket science", with that budget and personnel, yet she left the city $20 Million in debt! And went on to be governor and then the VP pick.

The OP's former boss probably didn't think her job was that difficult (or was only made difficult by all those idiots below her who kept second-guessing her wise decisions), and she ended up destroying the department but kept her job, allowing her to wreak havoc upon some other dept. in the bank with her incompetence.

6. That's it in a nutshell
The fact that she was a woman had little to do with anything.

3. If it wasn't rocket science being a mayor with a $6m budget and 53 people...
then why did the city council force her to hire an administrator to run the city?

7. Ding! Ding! Ding!
    The Word from Wasilla
During her mayoral administration most of the actual work of running this small city was turned over to an administrator. She had been pushed to hire this administrator by party power-brokers after she had gotten herself into some trouble over precipitous firings which had given rise to a recall campaign.

But, also, it should be noted that NONE of her predecessors had administrators; they flew solo. And then there's that $22 million in debt she left the small town with, having been at ZERO debt when she was sworn-in.

Very rough, very incomplete list of mayoral years...
  • Palin says it's not rocket science
  • Apparently she was ineffective enough that the city forced her to take on a city manager
  • Piled-up $22 million in debt
  • City has become Alaska's meth capital
  • Wanted to ban books
  • Vindictive enough to try to fire the town's librarian
  • Proclaims she's a reformer, but SHE introduced Rovian/Gingrich partisan politics to Wasilla
  • Considerable number of loyalty-driven firings
  • Use of govt facilities for political campaigning

Just think what her record would look like, and poor Wasilla, if she actually had more years of experience.
