**ACTION ALERT!** We Must RAGE against the MEDIA, So our TICKET doesn't HAVE to!
Edited on Sun Sep-07-08 04:03 PM by FrenchieCat
lOOK, we all know who the real culprits are in creating public perceptions during these elections, in terms of who has some of the largest sway in this election. It is the media, and how they choose to frame just about everything. We can try to deny it, but it would still be true. They decide after a speech, who is a Rock Star. They decide what stories they will cover and which they won't. They decide if Race and Gender are going to be used as political tools in these elections. They decide whether this contest will be about the issues or about personalities.

So, it is because of this that I ask; what are we doing about the Media?

Are supporters of Barack Obama writing letters to the Media, to Media Watchdogs? Or have most just given up and are simply commenting on Blogs?

If we take the easy road and simply sit around analyzing and decrying the Corporate media's direct complicity in their bias towards our candidate, but we dont bother to making our voices heard by the exact people who are tipping the scales of their reporting favorably towards McCain, then we will get what we deserve.

Here's what I'm suggesting: We must communicate directly with the MediaWhores. We have to shame them, if that is possible. We must make them aware that we know the game that they are playing. We must confront them, not by whining on Blogs (although that's OK too), but by demonstrating that we, the people, have so much energy and intensity in our wish to stop their bullshit, that we are willing to do what we normally might not; hold their feet to the fire when it comes to their coverage of these elections, and keep them there.

For those who think that someone else is doing this, and rationalizing that they don't have to, you are making a colossal mistake, which will be too late to correct sooner than later. Save the responses like "I'm not used to writing letters, I don't do this well", or "It won't do any good, they aren't going to change because of my letter", than you are part of the reason why we can lose this thing, and you should not exclude yourself from blame as to the outcomes of this election. If we don't address the media via letters and phone calls, etc.... than we are not doing all that we can in helping our ticket as much as we could. It is just that simple.

You see, that is what the Right does; it intimidates the various reporters, and it keeps the fire lit under their corporate interest protecting asses.

If we choose not to communicate directly with those who are perpetuating manipulation to our election process, then they will not stop their heavy Right wing bias.

One of our jobs should be to point out daily their uneven approach towards the two parties, and to cite specific examples and to do this via thousands of letters addressed directly to them and to their editors and producers. Yes, we need to let the Tom Brokaws, the Stephanopolouses, and the Ron Fourniers of the media know exactly that their bullshit is transparent.

You see, some media folks opine that our elections are for Obama's to lose, others say that Obama's race is the issue, still others say that it is the issues that will be the determining factor, while others claim that its about personalities.

Well I'm here to say that a large part of it is how we manage the media (yes, US), and how effective we show them up for who they really are; a biased arm of the Republican Party.

So in fact, the media will decide this election, unless we start doing something about them directly. It is an awesome task, but it can be done, if we decide that we are up to it collectively. The media is dangerous, and they must be confronted, because unless they are inpugned, they will not suddenly become "fair".

If the Right can cry about the media, then so should we.

Here are examples of what I mean:

Howard Fineman, McCain undercover lackey and cheerleader of the Republican ticket wrote an article in Newsweek yesterday. It was called "Beware of the Barraccuda!" you can read it here: http://www.newsweek.com/id/157697

I wrote to him yesterday at this email address: webeditors@newsweek.com
Plus I CCed Media Matters, Keith Olbermann and Rachel Maddow in this case.

Dear Mr. Fineman,

It's like Barack Obama stated today, you guys think we are that stupid. Ms. Baraccuda is so effective, she can't even get permission to use "her" song. She is no rock star; she's a McCain's gimmick in his pathetic "Country Last" attempt to win an election. Considering that she isn't qualified, let alone anyone should "fear" her are your words and those of other reporters.

In his book Social Theory and Social Structure, Merton gives as a feature of the self-fulfilling prophecy:

“ The self-fulfilling prophecy is, in the beginning, a false definition of the situation evoking a new behaviour which makes the original false conception come 'true'. This specious validity of the self-fulfilling prophecy perpetuates a reign of error. For the prophet will cite the actual course of events as proof that he was right from the very beginning.”

In other words, a prophecy declared as truth when it is actually false may sufficiently influence people, either through fear or logical confusion, so that their reactions ultimately fulfill the once-false prophecy.

My observation is that the clownlike corporate media is playing the same game it always plays, and forcing their manufactured reality upon us, the people that they are supposed to "inform". The corporate press fawns about a speech full of lies and degredation. The truth is that reporters knew of the lies when they praised the speech. It is as though lying to the American people is a generally accepted principle, when it shouldn't be. Gov. Palin's speech should have been judged not simply on its delivery, but on its substance, but of course it wasn't. To coronate Ms. Baraccuda, and insinuate that she is the Republican Obama, is the media's doing. We are not fools, and in fact, I for one am insulted. I realize that you have to eat, but please, you're literally killing the citizens of this nation in the process.

Respectfully,

XXXXXX

Or this letter that I wrote last week, pointing out that I could see the GOP talking points from a mile away! sent to: http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/6872152 /

I find it interesting that many in the media, especially GOP operatives are attempting to play up Gov. Sarah Palin's executive experience as something that she has that the Democratic ticket Obama-Biden does not. I believe that this is grossly incorrect.

It is my duty to remind us all that Barack Obama started his campaign from scratch, and in so doing, created the best political organization our history has ever witnessed. For nearly two years, using vision, innovation, intelligence, endurance, tactical genius, and a strong macro management style, Barack Obama has shown us all exactly what his executive skills are, and they are far superior to those of Ms. Palin.

We should also not forget the early executive experience that Sen. Obama gained as the President of the Harvard Law Review, as well as his singularily important role in the succesful Project Vote, in where he spearheaded an unprecedented registration drive which would elect Sen. Moseley Braun back in 1993. http://www.chicagomag.com/Chicago-Magazine/January-1993... /

And most recently, the Democratic Convention; the yet unsung crowning glory showcasing the executive brilliance of Barack Obama. The cable media tried hard to ruin it with their dedicated 24/7 instigation for disunity. Yet, in spite of cable and the network commentators, it came off without a nary a hitch. Certainly there are many people that participated and did a fantastic job, but let us give credit to who credit is due as we would had the convention failed.

The truth is that Barack Obama, in his calm and collected manner consistently provides a preview of what will be the Obama executive style; tactical adept dexterity without the drama.

Respectfully,

THE POINT IS THAT WE NEED ALL HANDS ABOARD!

WHEN WE SAY, NOT THIS TIME....THEN WE MUST DO SOMETHING DIFFERENT
THIS TIME, BECAUSE WE ARE AS MUCH PART OF THIS THING AS ARE OUR CANDIDATES
AND THIS THAT I HAVE RANTED ABOUT IS CLEARLY AN IMPORTANT PART OF IT!! :patriot:

2. Thats the fucking problem.....
We can't seem to get organized.....

and some would prefer to bang on their keyboard with their opinion, but don't bother to send them where those opinions might do some good.

I see hundreds upon hundreds of posts here everyday that would make perfect letters....yet they just sit here for the choir to read. I have a real problem when we refuse to see the forest for the trees. We have to activate......but it has to be a team effort. Some folks are still too busy speculating on whether Trig is Sarah's baby to even focus on what would really help, and it ain't speculating.

Edited on Sun Sep-07-08 09:48 PM by Waiting For Everyman
Maybe post the worst objectionable pieces there under that category, for those who don't have much time?

You're right, Frenchie Cat! And I'm onboard with doing it. Could there maybe be a forum where we could collect reasons or stories or statements that need "push back"? Just some way we could collect them together? With notice of what's wrong with them, for time-challenged members? This is such a big site, and there's so much news lately. Or a thread "pinned" somewhere?

Just a suggestion.

edit: I see that MediaMatters.org does this already pretty well.

9. I so agree with everything....
you say, but I am not optimistic about any change in the MSM reporting until we can change the ownership of at least one or two of these corporate media giants. Rupert Murdoch is now looking at buying the NY Times....where is our champion in furthering our agenda..PAGING MR SOROS!! Why do wealthy Dems not own ANY major media outlets or even a voting machine manufacturer? Why are there no Dems able to outsmart the repugs when it comes to hacking voting machines or software?

I have often said that Rush Limbaugh is the most dangerous person in all media, and he is often dismissed on this board as irrelevant...BS!! It was he who selected Palin a long time ago and he MADE it happen! Say what you want but if you listen to all the pundits on MSM count the number of times he is referenced. Yeah we have Randi and Thom and Malloy etc, but they don't reach half the audience of Limbaugh combined.

Until we can break through the corporate roadblock in getting out our message it will continue to receive little attention. The only thing that will threaten the corporate ownership of our media is MASSIVE boycotts of their products to the point that their bottom line is jeopardized. Is it feasible...I don't know but I have decided to give it a shot in my own little world. I have gone back to community only buying of everything that I can..buying all my vegs from CSA's or Farmer's Markets. I shop Costco and even tell them to please don't buy products from certain companies because they have a different agenda than ours.

I watch only Democracy Now for my news as well as The Journal on German DW TV and the BBC...but I get most of my news right here on DU.
So as I said, I am not optimistic about any individual correspondents on the MSM to have a change of conscience but I can hope..cuz that's all that's left.

10. K an R! I'm already there!
Some folks seem to think the media "won't listen" to us - so why bother. Well... Bullshit! The media exists on advertising - if their mailboxes get flooded with hundreds and thousands of letters from PISSED OFF Democrats - they may pause for just a moment. If they believe their cozy little arrangement with the republicans is about to be flushed own the toilet by an overwhelming Democratic victory they may have to re-examine their current world view. Especially if its attached to a paycheck. Ask BowTie Carlson or Joey Scarface just how well pandering to the right has advanced their careers.

So what's it gonna be folks - are we gonna make our future or are we gonna wait for someone else to make it for us?

14. Couldn't agree with you more!
The analysis and the opinions on the "effectiveness" of addressing the media are fair and reasonable, as long as someone is writing to the media anyways, just in case.

A movement is not comprised of one voice, but the many.

Either someone is In or the are OUT.

The media reacts to the Right, because the Right nudges them and puts them on the defensive. I don't see why it is not something that we should do......and do it constistently and energetically.

Forum Boards are great, because then one gets instant feedback to their opinions. The problem with that though, is that there is much much more for all of us to do, and breathing down the media's neck is one of them. Not just some of us, but as many of us as possible.

If The author who wrote about how "Obama's patriotism" received 500 letters asking about his intentions when he wrote this piece, because he simply was planting the seed--He will have to worry that what he did, folks were paying attention. The next story he writes, he may not take the same liberty. That's how we make a difference, one offender at a time.

Also write to Mr. Inhofe's senator office:

Dear Mr. Myers,
The "Country Last" ticket in where a 72 year old ailing man selects a Governor who lacks serious qualifications to be a heartbeat away from the presidency because she has a vagina, is whose patriotism I am questioning.

The last refuge of a lying plotting scoundrel is to attack the patriotism of others. That is exactly what I think of Mr. Inhofe. Because that is really all that he did, isn't it, via implication. He himself attacked the patriotism of Barack Obama. Who does Sen. Inhofe think he is to be so bold? If we had a fair media, it is his comments that would be questioned, but instead we just get a reporting of the fact that he said it, which furthers his case by planting the seed, and he knows it, which is why he opened his nasty mouth!

This country is going to hell in a handbacket precisely because of types like Mr. Inhofe, who are at their core nearly traitors to America. It is about as unpatriotic as anything to question the Patriotism of other Americans, and Inhofe infering such a personal cheap shots at someone who would be our President, is, as is Mr. McCain a "Country Last, me First" type of mouthpiece. That is the tragedy in this matter.

We must use our keyboards as an effective weapon aimed at the right people. Our posts here, as effective as they might be, are useless bouncing around inside an echo chamber. We need to turn our outrage, pain, and fear into constructive energy, and focus that energy where it will do the most good. On the media.

If we have a chance in hell of taking our country back, of returning the power to where it rightfully belongs -- with We the People -- we must fight the information gatekeepers, whether they are witting, or unwitting neocon propagandists.

22. here's mine - published a couple of days ago

http://registerguard.com/rg/EditorialsLetters/story.csp...

Media giving McCain a pass

“Hardball” anchor Chris Matthews succinctly described the media’s love affair with John McCain when he said, “We (the media) are his base.”

Thus we are inundated with snippets of Rev. Jeremiah Wright’s sermons, but not John Hagee’s.

While Michelle Obama’s every action and word is parsed and criticized, we never hear about Cindy McCain’s past, which includes stealing drugs from a nonprofit to support her addiction and lying about how many siblings she has.

The media are probably poring over grade school writings of the Obama daughters looking for anti-American sentiments. But there’s no mention of Andrew McCain, who recently resigned for “personal reasons” from the board of a Nevada bank that lost over $100 million. Likewise, we hear nothing about John McCain’s own adventures in the financial world, the Keating Five corruption scandal. Like father, like son?

Although McCain owns so many mansions that he has lost count, Obama is labeled as an elitist.

Despite talking about Czechoslovakia, the Iraq-Afghanistan border and mixing up Shiites and Sunnis, McCain’s foreign policy credentials go unquestioned.

While John Edwards’ extramarital affair was cited as proof that he was unfit to lead, McCain’s affair and subsequent abandonment of his family are taboo topics.

If Obama were taking Ambien to sleep instead of McCain, the press would be screaming about how his judgment would be impaired.

McCain’s Teflon shield seems to cover his entire family and past. The mainstream media should get off their butts and stop kissing McCain’s.

29. I send at least 4 or 5 letters a day
and cc appropriate ones to media matters, et al. I created a group in my email with all of the media watchdogs in it and I cc them on my letters.

I also try to send "thank you, we're watching" letters to those who do a good job.

I am in the media (not news) and I have some idea of what drives them. I always poke at their egos, because corporate money is one thing I can't fix, but I know some of these people and how they tick. Egos are everywhere and they in turn can force their bosses into letting them actually do a real story so they aren't humiliated. no journalist wants to be thought of as a hack.

Just my 2 cents. I've tried to start threads about this here and in the activism forum and I don't see much happening. I also posted a thread today asking women to write in to a blog "Women against Palin", which isn't just a blog -- it was created by female media powerhouses and will get viewing. I only got a few responses.

Interesting that everyone was bitching on threads around mine -- many responses to those.

I have to agree with FC here -- and just say if we aren't walking our talk and doing what we can, that makes us complicit.

34. The ABC Debate..
was proof positive for me that pushing back works. I don't expect them to change their game, but I want them to know that we are aware of the game they are playing, and the only way to do that is by volume. I think we are getting much better at it. Not because of any one site in particular but the combination of all.
and for instant gratification when an email just won't do..

37. I write emails to the media sometimes, but not recently.
I agree it would be more effective if a mass of us sent out a letter to CNN or whoever. Sort of how we DU polls.

38. another point is
that actually democrats make up more of the population than repukes.

they also feel the tide may be changing and they may need to lobby democrats in the WH in the future for their special interest bullshit.

so they are on the fence right now. This is a great time to let them hear our voice. Let them know we won't stand for the lies anymore, we demand accountability, real reporting, empirical facts not just opinions, digging, and the courage of an ethical journalist.

'no more yellow journalism, complicit in the crimes of the republican party.

ps fc, I just sent a note to Sanchez and Blitzer:-)

50. A radio show I subscribe to, Coast to Coast AM, has been giving Jerome Corsi
a platform to spout his BS for years. It's one of the only radio programs out there that will discuss unexplained and anomalous stuff. Some might say it's the subject matter is BS anyway, but it is, in fact, the most listened to overnight radio program in the US and around the world.

Corsi has been a 'before the main guest' guest to spout his conspiracy theories and views on world affairs. I listened to him once, dismissed him as crazy, and, I think in the back of my mind I the name was familiar, but I had forgotten he was the dick who wrote "Unfit to Lead". When his name came back recently with his new book, "Obama Nation", I felt sick, that all these years I've subscribed to this show and they've had this bloated lying fuck. I'm not going to give my hard earned money to a show that would overlook his racist and dishonest writings. I emailed everyone connected to the show.

Dear XXXXX,

I've been a listener and subscriber to Coast to Coast for several years, and a fan and listener for many years before that. I love the show and I've found, with the exception of global climate change, Coast has been refreshingly non-political. I've become aware, however, of the background of one of your frequent guests, Jerome Corsi.

I was shocked to discover he is the coauthor of the John Kerry book from 2004, "Unfit to Lead". As a registered Independent who likes to really get to the truth of who I'm voting for or against, I researched pretty thoroughly the swift boat vets accusations from that book, and, along with the media, found them to be very questionable, and most of it proven false. The founders of that movement, which it appears Mr. Corsi is one, have a clear political agenda. Whether one is Democrat, Republican or Independent, I find it dispicable to smear anyone whose served this country to win an election. I didn't like those tactics in 2000 when it was done to John McCain or in 2004 to John Kerry.

I saw Mr. Corsi on Larry King Live this week and was shocked to learn several years ago that as recently as 2002, he had a website espousing his, and others, racist and bigoted opinions and unproven information. To my disappointment he's also written another partisan book, this time about Senator Obama containing already debunked information using, what seems to be a continuation of his questionable journalistic methods. It's also been reported that Mr. Corsi has admitted he wrote this book because he doesn't want Senator Obama to win! He also confessed that he had written similar things about Senator McCain, another brave man who's served our country, but was going to hold off on that information till after the election.

While I'm well aware a lot of the subject matter on Coast is unproven, a lot of it is done in fun and certainly has no political agenda. I stopped listening to XXXX when I realized he had an agenda, and while I don't think you, the other Coast people, or George, have an agenda, allowing a man of Jerome Corsi's ilk on Coast to Coast has got me wondering.

I went back and checked out the last four months of shows and found, not only is Mr. Corsi giving his opinions on Border issues, but about Senator Obama as well! Again, while I know most of what you have on your show is unproven and opinionated subject matter, I rarely, if ever, get the feeling there's a partisan bent or, for that matter, any mean spirited or any obvious falsehoods or twisting of truth from your guests.

I don't know if other subscribers are aware of Jerome Corsi's agenda/record of dishonest reporting, but I can't imagine it's going to go over very well.

I love 99% of your guests/subject matter and I'll gladly squeeze the subscription rate into my very tight budget, but sadly, I'll have to cancel if I feel I'm spending my hard earned money on a program that would have a man like Mr. Corsi spreading some far right twisted agenda.

I hope this makes sense to you, and I hope I can go back to enjoying Coast and continue to be a subscriber.

Take Care,

XXXXX

I got a prompt response from one of the fill in hosts simply saying he'd never interviewed the guy. I sent him this follow up email:

Dear XXXXX,

I didn't know if you had or hadn't interviewed Jerome Corsi, but I thought you may be asked to at some future date.

As someone involved with the show, I thought the issue was important enough to bring to your attention. I know it's important to me, as a subscriber and long time listener, to keep Coast to Coast free of political agendas.

I honestly don't know how much influence you have at Coast, but I thought if this guest and his background troubled you as it does me, the inappropriateness of giving a man like Corsi a platform certainly would, at the very least, would be worthy of mention, or at most taking a stand on it.

I've listened to the show a long time and I'd like to stay a listener . . . and keep it the great and unique show that it's always been.

I love your reporting of the XXXXX, and applaud your honest reporting of the unexplained. Much thanks.

Take Care,

XXXXX

I won't post his email, but, he basically said he'd 'read enough about Corsi to know that he's not going to be on the program when he's hosting, not unless he wants to get ripped a new one'. I discussed this online with other listeners and I think they got enough complaints that, at least for now, Corsi's been cut from their show. I'll cancel my subscription the second he's back. I think it did make a difference. In fact, I think there were many people like me, you guys, etc. who wrote to media, I mean, the guy has disappeared . . . although I fear he may reappear closer to November. :grr:

51. The media is our #1 enemy for these next two months.
It's not the GOP, it's the media machine that spins their lies and misleads the American public about our two candidates.
