A wild theory
What if the Repugs, knowing full well that multiple disasters are looming (since they set them up) -- Iraq, Iran, Georgia, Economy, Deficit, Infrastructure, etc -- what if they have concluded that it is in their interest, as a party, to lose this election so they could 1) have a scapegoat to blame all the problems on and 2) use this opportunity to reinvigorate the base for subsequent elections, when it's safe to come out again?

It all feels so Rovian.

What if Rove knew McCain had a secret health issue (AD) and so took advantage of the situation to plant Palin in his mind as his perfect running mate. Rove would know the ticket would be doomed, and not just because of Palin, but because of imminent discovery of said health issue.

As we have been seeing, the base is certainly invigorated.

Now, let's throw in the sympathy card, with a tragic health diagnosis for McCain which pulls him as a viable candidate and of course costs the Repugs the election.

They'll have 4 years to retell that story, over and over and over. I can see lots of low-hanging fruit for the next election.

I can see them using a tactic like this at a time like this.

1. I see Rove's strategy as win-win.
If they literally win, that's it. They're in charge.

If they don't win, it's like Pee Wee Herman flying over the handlebars of his bike, dusting himself off, and coolly stating, "I meant to do that". In other words, Rove will never admit he's been whipped and will have a spin ready.

2. But I just don't think they really want to win
They know there's going to be a lot of pain coming, and they don't want to be the bad guys. Historically they have always "let" the Dems come in after them to clean up their messes and to restock the coffers so they can come back and pillage all over again.

That's what I see is happening.

3. I've always subscribed to that wild theory...
McCain is the sacrificial lamb. He is expendable.

This fits right in with blaming the "Democratic Congress" with our financial woes... like it was perfect until the Dems came back in numbers. We all know this is hogwash.

4. I think the clues are out there they will try to win at all costs again
The very wealthy have made too much money under the Bush* regime to let the power advantage slip through through their greedy fingers without a huge fight. One of the signs is the manipulation of the polls (we are supposed to think the election will be extremely close, or that McCain is favored to win).
