"It is with great sadness that I say to you John McCain is not an honorable man" -By Sgt Major Myers
Edited on Wed Sep-10-08 05:59 PM by kpete
The dictionary defines honor as, honesty, fairness, or integrity in one's beliefs and actions: a man of honor.

Honor - To Have And Have Not
by SGT MAJOR MYERS
Wed Sep 10, 2008 at 02:26:10 PM PDT

...............

I have known of and about John McCain for as long as he has been in the public eye. I have, as a fellow soldier and as a fellow citizen, respected him for his extraordinary military and public service. In fact I believe we as a nation should respect and appreciate and yes honor what he has done for our nation. I believe his have been the actions of an exceptionally brave and historically honorable man.

....................

It is with great sadness that I say to you that John McCain is not an honorable man today. The reason I say this is because I am observing and hearing reported by every major news organization in this country that he and his running mate are participating in and personally articulating blatant lies. These are not the actions of honorable people. When one is aspiring to the highest and second highest public offices in the land it is incumbent upon one to speak truth and only truth and to communicate about those issues that are vital and of importance to the citizens of the nation. It is not honorable for individuals to speak lies to the citizens and make unproven accusations against those whom they oppose. When one opposes another person in vying for public office it becomes even more important to insure that one speaks the truth and deals with issues and substantive differences and not innuendo and accusation.

The fact that John McCain is a former Naval Officer and a sitting United States Senator makes this lack of honor horribly reprehensible. But I think what makes this lack of honor so disgusting and even more vile is that he would lose himself to the point of using his own sacrifice and service as a shield to commit such petit dishonorable acts of lying. Conservative, liberal, or Independent, share his beliefs or not, it would be morally reprehensible for anyone to support someone who displays so little honor. Sometimes we must call them like they are. Prisoner of war or not service to country or not there is a line and John McCain and his running mate have crossed the line.

This nation has endured eight long years of lies and deceptions from the two highest ranking public figures in the country and virtually their entire administration. Our honor as a nation is not just blemished but in tatters and we cannot endure another four or eight years of the same. If for no other reason than the fact that John McCain and his vice presidential running mate have publicly lied and continue to lie this nation needs to insure that he does not occupy the office of the president. Our nation needs honor above all else at this crucial point in our history. With honor comes respect and from these come all else.

Those Are The Sergeant Major's Thoughts On That.

14. He is correct. McCain has prostituted his service to the country and become a craven liar.
What McCain has done has been to cheapen the experience of all those who suffered as he suffered, to one degree or another, from the Vietnam experience. He has used his POW status as a trophy and a bludgeon, and as a bargaining chip.

McCain is a disgrace. He has dishonored the uniform he wore, his comrades in arms, and his country.

Could not have said it better!

McCain's choice of Palin is an abomination and a slap in the face of EVERY United States military service member.

That he would risk his country's very own national security with a VP choice such as Palin is clear evidence that he is no longer FIT for service to this country of ANY kind.

Please see this excellent op-ed piece from the Falls Church News-Press (and if anyone would like to start a topic with it, please do -- I cannot since I've so few posts here):

An astounding, absolutely jaw-dropping dereliction of duty to his country, isn't it?

I only have a minute now to catch the latest news on DU; perhaps this evening I can post your op-ed piece.

Welcome to DU. :hi:

Is this how McCain wants to be remembered?? Let's face it - he could live a very long time (like his mom) but if he doesn't, and he doesn't win this election (please dear God!), then the way he is conducting himself now will be a big part of his legacy.

Men that served their nation proudly and did not expect their service to serve them in return.

They did it because they put their country first.

Grampy was on his 23rd mission over N.Vietman when he was shot down. Many of those missions were over civilian targets and dropping Napalm.

So tell me again how one becomes an 'honorable man and a War Hero' by getting caught burning civilians alive with Napalm in a previous illegal 'war'?

28. HONOR...what a quaint, almost obsolete concept.
And yet there are places where it still exists, and people who still embody it. John McCain is not one of them, even if he was at one time.

33. Phred 42, while I hear what you are saying about John McAnus' missions over North Vietnam
I must respectfully disagree with the implications of it. I'm a Vietnam vet who has absolutely no respect for McAnus as a Presidential candidate, a Senator or a human being. But, having been a soldier, I have to honor McCain's service as a pilot during the Vietnam war. No, I DO NOT AGREE THAT CIVILIAN TARGETS SHOULD BE NAPALMED. But, it is very unlikely that McCain knew What he was bombing other than that it was an alleged military target. Those missions were often targeted at anti-aircraft batteries that were set up to protect infrastructure that we wanted destroyed. And we know that many of them were in populated areas. Whether you approved then or now of the Vietnam war, it was a war and we were trying to win.

From the first operation I went on I realized that we (the U.S.) were in the wrong in what we were doing--allegedly fighting communism. To me, it was plain to see that we were fighting an insurgency by the very people we were trying to "save" from communism. Sound familiar? BUT, I was a soldier and I had a duty to do my duty in a lawful manner as best I could. That's what I did and that's what the soldiers I fought with did. Most of us felt that the war was wrong but we fought to keep each other alive to go home to our families and friends. Sometimes we saw innocent civilians bombed and napalmed by our pilots. We regretted the horror of it, and many of us have deep scars today from what we saw and what we did, but when those bombs fell and the VC or NVA died along with those civilians, we were grateful to the flyboys that there were fewer of them alive to kill us.

Bottom line, McCain was doing his duty by flying those missions. He was putting his life on the line to save Americans and South Vietnamese from being killed. For that, I honor and thank him.

I honor his having been kept in captivity for seven years. But I also honor the hundreds of other POW's who were captured, tortured, killed and maimed who did not try to capitalize on their experiences as POW's. That is one very big reason that I have no respect for McAnus.

The Sergeant Major has eloquently stated many of the other reasons I have no respect for McAnus. I applaud Sgt Major Myers for taking this stand. I'm sure he will be reviled for it, but in my eyes he is a true patriot.
