Palin as VP? was she a poor choice?
Why are we asking this of our nominee, Joe Biden, who has been terrific on the campaign trail and above that is more than qualified to be president at a moment's notice. Palin, however, come on! She's about as prepared as Mayor Pike of Mayberry.

Joe, you're doing a great job!

1. Well, she was certainly a good choice for VP CANDIDATE --
She's given the ticket a much-needed boost.

As for actually BEING a VP, the thought seriously scares me.

11. A dangerous, risky but transformative choice. McCain gambles she will survive 2 months of scrutiny

13. I keep quoting Pat Buchanan on Rachel, but I can't help it -- I think he nailed it:
The people are WILD about her.

It will take a LOT to chip away at that excitement - she's given them hope (although it's unfathomable to us). You can't counter an emotion with logic, facts, proof. I really don't know what it would take to have them turn on her - they'll forgive her for anything.

16. Our current contrast is unfortunate
They have their new tickey which is undeniably exciting. It's another first because it will be either the first woman or first black man elected to the executive branch. As soon as they have injected that, we have started hammering home the message about how bad the economy is.
It is not that it will last forever, but we are in a situation currently where we appear to be spreading gloom and doom because we have moved on to facts. Beating up on the woman in the race only perpetuates it. We just need to be realistic about what is happening. We will soon get into the real contrast so that they see who wants to continue to spread gloom and doom, etc.

15. Exactly
She wasn't chosen necessarily to be VP ala Cheney or Gore. She is the campaigner. It is flipped this time.
She is however taking pressure off of McCain so that there are fewer McCain Gaffes. Look for her to do more campaigning than most VP candidates.
On the other hand they are going to sell on-the-job training thing and the value of adviders hard.

3. She was poor choice, he was great choice... BTW, have you noticed...

that a lot of negative threads are being started, and that these negative threads invariably get lots of responses? Here's an example: http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=132x7028850

This person asks if Biden was a good choice as VP. (the same thing you did, except you asked about Palin). And this person has gotten over 100 responses-- and I'm the only responder to your thread. Funny...

5. She's terrible if you care about governing more than
about getting elected.

If you care only about getting elected, she's a great pick.

14. A terrible choice for them, a good one for us
Consider what Tom Ridge or Joe Lieberman would've done. I say we'd be in deep shit had either one been selected because there isn't a real problem with them. Sure we hate Lieberman but you can't claim he's not qualified. Sure the fundies would've been pissed off but McCain would've attracted just as much attention and a wider range of voters.

Now he appeals to the fundies and the not-so-smart. Yes a worrisome percentage of the electorate but our chances are still good to excellent.
