Is this the McCain news everyone was waiting for?
BREAKING: McCain covered up Cindy's drug use/theft, blocked DEA probe of her charity (UPDATED)
by Joey Dee
Thu Sep 11, 2008 at 07:56:05 AM PDT

Matt Stoller is all over this:

A whistleblower is coming forth against John and Cindy McCain, and the picture he is painting is not a pretty one. You've probably heard about Cindy McCain stealing prescription drugs from her charity in the 1990s. Today, Tom Gosinski, her former employee and a close friend of the McCain's, came out on the record about the entire sordid episode. And it appears that McCain used his Senate staff and resources to cover up Cindy's drug use, and potentially to prevent the Drug Enforcement Agency from investigating his wife's theft of illegal prescription drugs.

1. Sounds like it. But I doubt it will be a big story.
especially since it was 15 years ago.

2. DU has been ahh-poo-poo-ing the story all day.
Apparently its just fine to break the law if you might be seen as "protecting" your thieving, drug smuggling wife. :eyes:

6. It's not that WE think it's fine to break the law in this instance, it's that
we don't think it'll make a difference to his campaign.

We've got plenty of info about which WE'RE enraged, but nobody else seems to care. I think this will turn out to be the same.

Don't diss your fellow Dems/DUers, diss the American public and MSM.

11. *some* DUers have been outright shitting on those who think this story matters...
No... not MOST DUers.. and certainly not those who's opinions I trust (you included).

But the thing thats being missed here is that many, many, voters dont know anything about this scandal. Even myself... I was not aware of Johns involvement in the whole thing. I was 20 at the time. Now I'm 35. To people like me... this IS news. And it IS a big deal.

He got her a passport so she could smuggle drugs. It matters.

13. Thank you for the reality check.
DU sometimes assumes that everyone in this country is "informed".

Thats a gigantic mistake, imho.

16. No kidding. It's the most dangerous way to think...
To think that, for example, if WE are outraged by something, then surely anyone would be.

To care or try to understand what others think is compassionate, it doesn't require agreement with those views.

If we don't have at least a little compassion for how others view the world, we'll just keep losing.

"Reality check" is exactly right!

:hi:

14. I'm with you, bunnies!
This is about John McCain abusing his power! Anyone who can do that for personal gain should NEVER be POTUS!!

I'm sick of the fucking McCain apologists around here!

18. It's not so much the story itself as the way it was introduced.
Whether it was done deliberately or through some kind of mass snowball effect, I don't know, but the whole thing was over the top and, really, a bit cruel to those who believed.

The story itself serves to deepen the PROFILE of a man whose 'experience' is not so good. A little drip, not the tsunami some people got their hopes up for.

20. Well, I don't know if we can say yet
that it won't be a tsunami. But I surely agree that so much has happened that most American's don't give a hoot about that it isn't something one wants to get their hopes up about.

19. I realized that this morning
that there a many people out there who don't even know anything beyond Cindy have a Rx pill addiction (if they even know THAT). So it definitely is worth bringing this out into the open again. Additionally, it looks like there may be more details coming out on what McCain did to obstruct justice.

Yes, but since Arizona is not the sum total of the world, it might be big news somewhere else.
I know about Cindy's drug use, but not about cover ups. And I know a lot of people who didn't even know about the drug use or any details. If McCain can be linked to a cover up about the drugs and it gets to be common public knowledge (more public than just Arizona) that is one more nail in the 'family values' coffin.

5. yep. almost all of this was in the Phoenix NewTimes in 1994
http://www.phoenixnewtimes.com/1994-09-08/news/opiate-for-the-mrs

I'm not trying to downplay the fact that McCain abused his power, just pointing out that this story has sunk like a lead balloon in the past and there's little reason to think it won't sink again. Its not going to force McCain out of the race, that's for damn sure. (Which is what some of the posts seemed to assume before we knew what the story really was)

4. LSN now says to wait until tomorrow. Story will get bigger.
I think he/she is doing the happy dance again.

1 thing though, is that I was expecting some sort of McCain dementia story (some claims to have confirmed that when tapping sources on the LSN story).

I am distinctly unimpressed. The general public has already demonstrated that it doesn't much care.
