I think Obama should start calling himself a "Maverick"
Do it straight.

Then say, "Just kidding. I wondered what it felt like to take on my opponent's persona...and what it felt like for McCain to claim HE was the Agent for Change."

If it got the attention of the press it could precipitate a discussion of McCain being a "copy cat"
Perhaps grabbing the attention of the "confused."
