Senator Joseph R. Biden Jr. was in a gunslinging mood today in a region of southwestern Virginia where Democratic votes are sometimes hard to find, and we’re not speaking metaphorically about his method of holstering up.

At an annual fish fry with members of the United Mine Workers in Castlewood, Va., he seemed to try to soothe any worries among those who might be reading all the mailings from the National Rifle Association that label Senator Barack Obama as a gun owner’s worst enemy:

“I guarantee you, Barack Obama ain’t taking my shotguns. So don’t buy that malarkey,” Mr. Biden said. “They’re going to start peddling that to you.”

“I got two,” Mr. Biden told the crowd, referring to his arms and then to Mr. Obama. “If he tries to fool with my Beretta, he’s got a problem. I like that little over and under, you know? I’m not bad with it.”

“So give me a break. Give me a break.”

I noticed that when he made the comment about Barack not taking our guns, the people in the crowd were nodding their heads. They get it! This crowd was on their feet a lot for Joe. These UMWA people are very serious about their Dem candidates. Very supportive. They asked people to fill out forms calling for the Freedom of Choice Act and they got a ton of responses. What a great day!

The only polls taken in the past three months have McCain up by an average of only 4.5. He's still the favorite, but the state isn't impossible as a pickup.

Hunting shotguns are absolutely irrelevant to the issue as it stands in 2008. They weren't the issue in 1994, or 2000, or 2004, and they're not the issue now. If the ticket opposes new gun bans, they need to SAY so.
