I'm going to Las Vegas...going to Las Vegas. |
|
Canvassing for the Democratic ticket.
'Though I've had some qualms in the past about out of state folks canvassing for our candidates in other states, this one seems a good fit. I live in California, Nevada's our neighbor. Lots of people have roots in both states, we are all "far west" and share a lot of common concerns.
So I figured what the hey.
I'm going to Las Vegas.
This is one to win.

4. I'm looking forward to it. We're talking the big Vegas suburb, local voting block here. |
|
Not the tourist Vegas. Gambling, Wayne Newton and echoes of the Rat Pack don't hold an allure for me, so I'm fine with that.
Maybe you could do something locally? I'm sure it would be appreciated - and a help.

7. I was canvassed last week in Henderson, just outside of Las Vegas |
|
Young woman from San Diego came to my door. She was more prepared than others I have encountered in previous cycles. She greeted me immediately by name and knew I had recently moved to this address.
It was a standard list of questions -- the major races and who I planned to vote for, how I would describe my political philosophy, any differences politically in this area compared to other places I've lived.
She said she missed the San Diego weather and was hoping we'd lose the 100 degree tendencies soon, since she's on her feet canvassing for 8 hours per day.
It got me away from my monotonous computer job for about 5 minutes, and overall I was impressed. But I'm worried we're putting too much emphasis on the suburban areas like where I live. The guys I know and talk to in Las Vegas proper at the casinos aren't registered, for the most part. Same thing with young blacks I talk to briefly in supermarkets or convenience stores or wherever. I'll mention politics and ask if they are registered, and I can't think of the last one who said yes. Las Vegas is definitely an untapped resource, with pathetic turnout numbers particularly in midterms, and that's crucial to Nevada outcomes since it's the one major pro-Democratic area in the state.

10. Do you have some suggestions for Democratic canvassing locally? |
|
That'd help folks on the ground, I'm sure. Forward them to the Nevada Dem. organizers. Thanks.

8. Members from my So Cal group are too |

My local Dem Obama HQ is sending a group of about 20 to do the same. Meanwhile, we're phone banking to Nevada voters and asking them for support. They need to know Obama's stand against Yucca Mountain... that seems to be the hot topic.

9. Specifically, water policies, BLM policies, Yucca depository, and the role of the federal govt |
|
in the West.
I grew up in New England, where there is little obvious federal involvement. The history there, as I understood it, is a kind of benign neglect of federal power.
Here it is decidedly graphic - much of the land is federally owned, in one way or another. Vast tracts of land and resources are under the federal aegis.
Political battles here often turn on who has the authority. Water, fishing, oil, logging, environmental protection, development, mining, etc. etc. And most recently, mandated environmental standards.
It's an interesting mix.
I'm very pro federal involvement and federal responsibility. We pay for it.
It always boggles me when Republicans call for less government when running for government office.
Go figure.
