Obama is on a glide path to victory, so there's no upside to a John McCain political murder-suicide.

I would rather we win with 300 electoral votes in a normal election than win a landslide becuse the nation is in chaos.

McCain is so crazy that I can't say "never" but anyone who blows up this bill will, by next Wednesday, be less popular than Bush.

2. the CBO says it is quite possible this bailout will harm more than help, so do many economists
As for me - if Bush is pushing so hard FOR something, it must be bad for us and the US.

10. BINGO ... I don't buy the economic mushroom cloud ...
As you noted, Bushco does nothing, NOTHING, unless his peeps are turning a big coin ...

This thing is the IWR all over - a month before a major election, the mushroom cloud in the form of a stock market collapse, them saying they want a "quick and clean" bill ...

Fem ... I don't like having a gun to my head one bit, the push is too hard and too quick.

3. this country is going to be in chaos anyway...
and there is no such thing as a 'normal' election in this country. I think our whole country is insane.

4. I'll be honest: I don't understand the logic of the OP of this thread at all.
When times are toughest and things in this nation are at their most chaotic I want the best man as my president and that man is Barack Obama and not John McCain. I have confidence that Obama will lead this nation in the direction it should go.

5. I don't think so

If he kills this deal and the stock market goes down the financial and national security Republicans will leave him and even help dissect him.

Its not a question of killing the deal its a question of killing the deal and then what happens.

If nothing happens then he probably does look good but if it were to lose 25% of its vaule they will tar and feather him.

BTW is it just me or does it seem like he is aging years for days before our eyes?

I was stunned how hold he looked today.

8. I am assuming your first scenario to be the case
"If he kills this deal and the stock market goes down the financial and national security Republicans will leave him and even help dissect him."

Whether this bill is genius or folly there's no doubt that Wall Street will react very negatively to non-passage in the short term, and the entire election is now contained within the short term.

6. I rather doubt this bill is going to save anything.
The reason we're having an economic meltdown is that Wall Street has been claiming trillions of dollars in value that does not exist. No legislation in the universe can fix that.

11. The OP is about politics and short-term market action
It's not whether the bill would save anything in the big picture. It is that non-passage would have immediate, visible effects.

"McCain kills bill. DOW drops 1500" is a fatal headline.

I don't even know what game he's playing at this point.

9. McCain Is Encouraging House GOP To Kill The Deal, BUT...
The House GOP is killing it for reasons that are inconsistent with the new Populist McCain. The House GOP wants less regulation AND more tax breaks for companies. Thus, for all of McCain's populist rhetoric, his party is going to push for pro-corporate tweaks to the bill.
