On MSNBC right now, huffing about how "This could help McCain! If they go too far this could help him! People might think they're picking on him!"

He also followed the GOP talking points about Letterman being an 'entertainment' show during these very very serious times. No mention that McCain flat-out lied about getting right back to DC when he cancelled the Letterman appearance. Lying is apparently par for the course for these Rethugs...

I am in my early 70's, and I have always pondered why they call on Brokaw when a disaster arises for his in-depth analysis of a situation. Is he a journalist?? I don't remember him ever reporting from a front-line, nor within a dangerous environment. He has no more knowledge or insight of situations than our local pretty faced news reporter. Just what has he ever done to function as the 4th rail of our democracy????

He said so last night.

Brokaw: McCain timeout a 'smart tactical move'

Phil West
Thursday, September 25, 2008

OXFORD, Miss. — Republican Sen. John McCain made a smart move when he took a campaign timeout and returned to Washington to take part in the bipartisan effort to deal with the nation’s financial crisis, whether he participates in Friday’s debate or not, broadcaster Tom Brokaw said this evening.

The Overby Center for Southern Journalism and Politics hosted “An Evening with Tom Brokaw” featuring the NBC News special correspondent, who gave an overview of the presidential debate and the election landscape.

Polls showed McCain was losing ground to Democratic Sen. Barack Obama going into the planned nationally televised debate at the University of Mississippi.

“I thought it was a smart tactical move on the part of the McCain campaign. ‘Going to Washington so I can work on my country’ … buy some time to collect your thoughts,” Brokaw said.

Brokaw will moderate the second presidential debate, set for Oct. 7 at Belmont University in Nashville.

The other thing from the excerpted article that I found interesting was Brokaw's focus on "one-liners from previous debates". Let's see if Brokaw gives McCain an opener for a one-liner to help McCain regain some standing in the polls.

58. Not sure what you guys are talking about ... Brokaw is not a Republican.
I'd assume he's registered independent (a lot of journalists do that), but everything I've read about him convinces me he's a moderate Democrat.

Close friend of Bill Moyers; co-owns property with Clinton Admin's Robert Rubin. An environmentalist and Sierra Club member, Brokaw was offered a job in the Clinton Administration in 1993 (head of Park Service), but declined.

The neocons consider him a flaming leftist, and they live to catch him revealing his moderate-Demo. "Brokaw has dismissed accusations that he has a liberal bias, both by saying he has been criticized from right and left alike, and by saying that "bias -- like beauty -- is in the eye of the beholder."

Journalists have to ask the tough questions of both sides; just because he's not a cheerleader for the left, don't assume he's a Republican. Just because he's not KO or Rachel Maddow, don't assume he's in bed with the neocons.

62. No one is saying Brokaw is pro-McCain. It's just the humor of McCain needing protection
Brokaw is part of the me-too lapdog press establishment. He may work for righteous causes, but he rarely uses his platform as a national journalist to call the wealthy Powers That Be on their baloney. There's a difference between being a cheerleader for the left (which is what Olbermann does) and simply being a solid journalist who doesn't ignore the abuses of the powerful, which is where Brokaw is lacking.

64. I think he is pro-McCain and journalistically he has no business
moderating one of the debates.

I read in the NYT not long ago that during the 2004 Republican Convention Tom Brokaw AND Bob Scheiffer (who also is moderating a debate) attended an INTIMATE birthday party for John McCain.

They have a personal relationship with the senator and therefore should be nowhere near a debate.

It's journalism ethics 101.

67. Help McCain?!! Good one. Here's what a stranger said
to me today at Walgreens. I was buying a commemorative magazine about Obama's historic candidacy and the checkout lady (probably early 60's) picked it up and said, "oh this is nice." Then she started railing against McCain. She said, "well I guess McCain is going to show up tonight. Can you believe he tried to weasel out of it? And he lied to David Letterman. Did you see that on TV? I can't believe he would do something like that. He should be ashamed of himself!"

It was hilarious.

And, for the record, Brokaw is a shadow of his former self who shills for McCain on a regular basis so who gives a shit what he says.
