He stood his ground. McCain blinked.
It doesn't matter that the issue had nothing whatsoever to do with terrorism. Right now, across the country, those "bitter", blue collar, mostly rural, and mostly white males that were supposedly in the tank for McCain are looking at him and seeing someone who backs down.
Obama just picked up a significant part of a voting block that he had little hopes of making inroads with just yesterday. Or at the very least, McCain just lost many of those same voters.
