Well, he was thinking of the massive charts he has draped up in every office he walks into, the charts that tell him he has his base PLUS locked up, m and is now fighting for the lion's share of about 7% of undecideds. He was thinking what all the evidence in the world shows, that such undecideds hate fucking politics because of the nastiness and spittle. And he was thinking he can win 4-5% percent of them by keeping his cool and being congenial.
And he's right.
Just like he's been right about the pace of attacks in the ads, despite what the panic mongers in the DU Worry-Brigade would have you believe. Just like he was right about playing the small forums while the Palin candle burned out, despite what the panic mongers in the DU Worry-Brigade would have you believe. Just like he was right in his approach to the economic mess, despite what the panic mongers in the DU Worry-Brigade would have you believe.
He was thinking one more thing: he already has your vote, so it doesn't matter fuck all what you think. McCain already has the Freeper vote, so they can flail around and disrupt forums like this and it doesn't matter a fucking bit.
He's looking for 4% out of the 7%. With 5% it's a blow out. And I sure as hell trust his judgment over yours. Unless you can tell me when the last time was that you won statewide office and outlasted the strongest primary challenger in history?

a pretty good night for the Obama campaign.

While McCain will hop into his Hummer and jet outta the place.
Obama knows how to play it properly.
I'm loving this and learning a hell of a lot. And so is the rest of the world. I believe the anticipation of this new man in the White House is already causing optimism all around the globe.

Undecideds were VERY receptive to Obama, much more than McCain.
Their reaction to McPain's snarkiness was obviously negative.

25. Yup. I think that's what I said. |
|
However, there was a distinction between the condescending snarks by McCain and the fact-based attacking that Obama did. Campbell Brown astutely observed that the audience quite definitely discerned the difference, with the former bringing much more negative reaction from the audience.

that tie/suit combo killed.
and his hair was just the right length.
Don't laugh, I'm serious - his look was a winner, and that counts in subtle ways people don't realize.

and considering the "strategy" he and his consultants and guys like Gibbs employed right up to the convention and shortly thereafter, we're all very fortunate that happened.

32. I think you are right. |

But at the same time I think there were missed opportunities.
-He could have calmly mentioned all the lobbyists on McCain's campaign. -He could have calmly called McCain on his lie that he supports vets and cited his voting record. He should have that memorized the way McCain pulls out that POW card.
Personally I was not blown away by this performance. However, it was probably a good thing for him to be a little bit understated since this was his first introduction to a lot of people. He can build momentum in the next two debates and hopefully he'll deliver the knockout punch in the third one, with most of America rooting him on.

We have to remember who it is Obama has to win over now. They are not the political junkies, for one thing, who are going to be well-versed in foreign or domestic policy. And they are as you describe---they don't have the partisan spirit and passion. As the OP says they hate the nastiness and spittle.

Not be nasty, but just hit McGramps back a bit on his lies. Just keep repeating "Tell the TRUTH, John" about everything.
Obama played a really good defense last night. It's time to go on offense.
