My grades: Obama A-, McCain D
Obama got in all the zingers, and I'm actually glad he let McCain look condescending. Being condescending in debates doesn't play well. I thought Obama stood his ground when he had to, even though he said "I agree" too many times. McCain looked bellicose/nasty to low info. voters instead of forceful. All McSame had were tired talking points not even delivered well, with horrible grins.

Obama: C (for allowing the aged pig to humiliate him)
Cain: P (for an aged PIG with little intelligence and lots of anger)

Sen. Obama, B+, McCain C-
The 'ear-mark' stuff probably played well, and in addressing tax matters, Sen. Obama really should said something like "You're lying to the American people, John."
McCain wore much worse on the ear and eye as the thing went on, and Sen. Obama kept form and grew stronger by the end.

I agree that the earmark stuff could have been handled slightly better. But Obama looked much more in command on the bailout proposal.

I scored the fight similarly. I gave McCain a couple of the early rounds. |
|
They had a draw a couple more rounds, then Obama won out. Ironically, Obama completely dominated the actual topic, foreign policy.

28. I'd give Obama a B+ and McCain a D+ ... McCain went too far with condescension. |
|
In fact, when he didn't get Obama's goat with it he escalated ... and Obama just kept his balance. At that point, McCain SHOULD have stopped doing it, but he didn't. His final "Senator Obama just doesn't understand"'s sounded desperate, angry, and PETULANT.
Obama faced McCain directly and McCain just couldn't meet him eye-to-eye.
Obama's got game and McCain doesn't. It's as simple as that.
If it were a basketball game, Obama would have spent a lot of time at the free-throw line.
McCain can't even pronounce "Ahmadinejad."

When you repeatedly state someone does not understand, you take on the burden of demonstrating it, and if you can demonstrate it, you do not need to say it at all. McCain did not demonstrate superior knowledge, either of foreign affairs or military and geo-political strategy. He seems to imagine bellicosity equates to understanding. It does not.

Maybe my expectations were too high, but I literally cried. He just stood there and smiled and studdered while the cocky little crypt keeper slaughtered him. Why? Why do our candidates have to be so NICE? That was John Kerry's problem. TOO NICE. Nice doesn't win elections. McCain won that debate and Obama smiled about it. Oh my God. Obama missed opportunity after opportunity to mop the floor with McCain and agreed with him TOO MANY TIMES. Even COMPLIMENTED him while McCain was ripping Obama a new butt. WTF?

They favored Obama. Most of the pundits on CNN and ABC said Obama won.

9. I would grade Obama at a B+ and McCain at a C- |
|
Obama's strengths were his calm, his courtesy, and his specific policy points. His weakness was not taking some of the opportunities to hit McCain hard.
McCain's strength was some of the jabs he threw...he got in some good shots. But his weakness was his mean, nasty attitude. That does not play well with voters, who often vote based on appearances. Body language counts for so much.

McSame didn't explode, so he gets at least a C, but he was wholly unconvincing and boring so he gets a B-

|
When Mc was talking about no more torture, I was hoping Obama would say "Then why did you vote for it?"
And when Mc was doing his song and dance on how he loves the Vets, Obama should have mentioned the times Mc voted against them.
2 missed opportunites.
McCain on the other hand - totally condescending and bitchy. D

McShame D- extremely condescending, rambling, wandering, failed to make eye contact, got some facts wrong, looked bad..

A good performance for Obama overall, but for God's sake STOP SAYING MCCAIN IS RIGHT. Even if you agree with him on some overarching principle, DO NOT SAY IT LIKE THIS.
Also, get more aggressive. He missed a few opportunities to nail McCain on things like the GI bill and torture.
Good job on the other things though--you made a point of correcting him on the tax plan, and the "You were wrong" segment, and the phrase "Orgy of spending" which I think will live on long past this debate.
McCain--All right. He didn't completely blow his stack, unfortunately for us. He seemed, through most of the debate, to be in control of his thoughts and he delivered most of them articulately. But his body language was horrendous--refusing to address Obama while talking about him like he wasn't even there, that awful grin....those are the things people take away from a debate these days too, Senator McCain.
