Andrew Sullivan trashes Zell Miller
Edited on Thu Sep-02-04 08:00 AM by demdem
THE MILLER MOMENT: Zell Miller's address will, I think, go down as a critical moment in this campaign, and maybe in the history of the Republican party. I kept thinking of the contrast with the Democrats' keynote speaker, Barack Obama, a post-racial, smiling, expansive young American, speaking about national unity and uplift. Then you see Zell Miller, his face rigid with anger, his eyes blazing with years of frustration as his Dixiecrat vision became slowly eclipsed among the Democrats. Remember who this man is: once a proud supporter of racial segregation, a man who lambasted LBJ for selling his soul to the negroes. His speech tonight was in this vein, a classic Dixiecrat speech, jammed with bald lies, straw men, and hateful rhetoric. As an immigrant to this country and as someone who has been to many Southern states and enjoyed astonishing hospitality and warmth and sophistication, I long dismissed some of the Northern stereotypes about the South. But Miller did his best to revive them. The man's speech was not merely crude; it added whole universes to the word crude.

Andrew Sullivan captures Miller's craggy and curdled mix of lies and blood and soil. A senator from the other party willing to endorse your party's nominee is something that would be hard for either party to pass up. But I think the Republicans let this one go to their head.

Should we be anticipating Andrew taking leave of the GOP along with the Log Cabinet Republicans next week?

4. I do believe...
That Captain Bareback has put down that chalice full of nepenthe, that he has been holding to his lips for lo these many years, and his vision is clearing. Oh, it will have fits and starts, but The Captain is strting to have the veil ripped from his eyes.

5. I think Sully is going to end up in the bush camp, but still....
He's been harder on this convention and it's speakers than I thought he would be. It's strange because for the Dem convention he was full of praise for pretty much everyone but Kerry. This convention he's been pretty negative about most of it, although I'm predicting he'll fawn over bush's speech.

But as much a tool as he is, he is rightly pointing out both the high level of negativity and attacks, and the low level of actual substance.

I'm still predicting he'll endorse bush, for whatever that means to anyone (I'm sure it means nothing to no one).

6. I want Miller to read this aloud on the convention floor.

Cheney is ignoring his own record.
"We have to get on with the business of cutting…We have to cut out those things we don't need. We have to cut out those things that we can do without in the military area, that we can do without in terms of the complex that is the Department of Defense…Over the course of the last year, since I've been Secretary, I've recommended terminating, canceling, shutting down 20 separate weapons programs." - Secretary of Defense Dick Cheney, 4/30/90

7. If a winger like Sullivan is attacking the Republicans,
it gives cover to mainstream journalists to do the same. Interesting.

8. Sullivan's been convinced he says
"Last night was therefore a revealing night for me. I watched a Democrat at a GOP Convention convince me that I could never be a Republican. If they wheel out lying, angry old men like this as their keynote, I'll take Obama. Any day."
