Soldier's mother ``ecstatic'' about Obama's bracelet
http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/chi-ap-wi-obama-bracelet,0,6413408.story

By DINESH RAMDE | Associated Press Writer
4:28 PM CDT, September 28, 2008

MILWAUKEE - The mother of a Wisconsin soldier who died in Iraq says she was "ecstatic" during Friday's debate when Senator Barack Obama mentioned the bracelet she gave him in honor of her son.

Tracy Jopek of Merrill told The Associated Press on Sunday she was honored that he remembered Sgt. Ryan David Jopek, who was killed in 2006 by a roadside bomb.

She criticized Internet reports that suggested Obama exploited her son for political purposes.

She acknowledges e-mailing the campaign in February asking that Obama not mention her son in speeches or debates. But she says Obama's mention on Friday was appropriate because he was responding after Senator John McCain said a soldier's mother gave him a bracelet.

Jopek says Obama's comment rightfully suggested there's more than one viewpoint on the war.

-----------------------------------------------------------

Fuck the wingnuts for trying to hurt Obama by using this poor woman and her son.

11. How Amazing! She was doing the right thing by
not wanting it exploited and then she acknowledged that Obama needed to say what he did.

Good Call by Obama, too:bounce:

Thank you, Tracy Jopek, for setting the record straight! And may your son, Sgt. Ryan David Jopek, who was killed in 2006 by a roadside bomb,
Rest In Peace.

16. It was McCain who was exploiting that soldier by trying to score brownie points. I think Obama's
response was not only appropriate, but drew attention to McCain's attempt to exploit that soldier for political gain. It really backfired on him.

Because Obama had it in honor of her son.

McCain was pimping his.

Obama was pointing out that he has one too, but wasn't using it for publicity, like McCain does WITH EVERYTHING

25. You know, after we win this election, I wish we would
have a day of national mourning for all our fallen heroes. Due to so much secrecy, our nation as a whole has been isolated from those families who have solely carried this weight. I think there should be a televised memorial service from Arlington so we can appreciate and celebrate the sacrifices of all those who answered their nation's call. Also, there should be an outpouring of love and appreciation for those wounded vets. This nation needs to heal, in my opinion these steps would move us toward that goal.

37. God Bless Tracy and Ryan Jopek.
I understand why she did not want her son and his memory used. But, I am so happy that she realized and was pleased that his memory was honored in this way. It was not a political ploy, but meant as a lesson to ensure no other young man is sacrificed for the wrong reasons ever again.

40. I am so glad to hear this.
I hate it when right-wingers act like they have a monopoly on caring about our troops, and it especially infuriates me when they insinuate that we want them to fail.

Every time I see a young soldier I want to tell them, "I don't have to approve of the politics behind the war or the president to appreciate the courage it takes to serve. Thank you."

47. Bracelet
The Republican smear machine never admits their lies. They keep on repeating the same lies, knowing some dumbass will believe them. Bush, Cheney, and his crew kept repeating the lie that Iraq had attacted us, and to this day I hear dumbass rednecks saying, "They attacted us man, we need to pay them back." If you try to explain, you might as well be talking to a stump. (Of course some of these folks have the same IQ as the stump.)
