1. Any idea what level McCain loses at? Millions?
I have been reading about his gambling problem for quite a while. He even has tables and attendants brought to his room. So he must turn a bundle over to those casinos.

3. Original term was a cow that had left the herd (to be devoured by wolves?)

"A maverick is an unbranded range animal, especially a motherless calf; it can also mean a person who shows independence of thought or action; a lone dissenter; a non-conformist or rebel."

9. I heard it was named after a rancher who refused to brand his cattle.
Sam Maverick. Hence when an unbranded calf showed up Maverick would claim it. He claimed he didn't want to hurt the cattle. Many, if not all, thought he was just a thief.
John McCain, Just a thief?

5. McCain's favoured game says a few things about his character.
Craps is all risk and adrenaline, no thought--and more than a little show-offishness; standing at the table, looking down the green baize, rattling the dice, turning to a pretty girl nearby and asking her to blow on them for luck, hitting your point, hearing the ripple of voices around you, a few scattered cheers, applause, the voice of the croupier saying 'all right, we've got a shooter'; being the centre of attention, your rush magnified by the sounds of the people around you hanging on your every move...

And in contrast, Obama is a poker player (and a damned good one, from all accounts). While McCain is up front staking it all on a roll of the dice, Obama's in a smoky back room, gauging his cards, the men around the table, looking for a twitch, a blink, a lowered brow, any tell that'll tip him off to an opponent's hand, keeping icy cool as the betting comes round...which qualities are more desirable in a President? A desire to show off while taking huge risks on a stroke of chance? Or the ability to read others and divine their state of mind while keeping your own hidden, to know when to take a risk and when the risk is too great? I think I know what my answer to that is.

6. For me, "Maverick" was the side-kick of "Oil-Rich Texan" in a Bugs Bunny
cartoon titled Oily Hare.
