36. the GOP House members are running for their reelection |
|
Their constitutencies are staunchly opposed to the bill. They want to get reelected in 5 weeks.
Democrats who saw that 2/3 the GOP were against the bill and who knew from their own constituents that such constituents were vehemently opposed to the bill. They took a pass.
This bill is DOA, and now we will get to see what the markets do if the sign is that NO bailout is coming as anticipated. I think it helps us, as a party, for this vote to fail. This puts the whole thing on the GOP now. If the economy goes SOUTH suddenly, they will get the blame. The economy is not going to get well, so we don't have to worry about that happening.
I think we are in the position to sit back and let voters blame the GOP when their economic woes increase the next few weeks.

is this possibly a Repb calculated trick to make Obama and the Dems look bad? "See, we repubs are looking out for you voters, we don't approve this horrendous bill that will cost YOU money. But that Obama, he was 100% for it! "

The Repubs WANTED it to pass, but they wanted the Democrats to pass it. That way they could have their cake and eat it to.
The Democrats did not want to vote for this bill, largely because it is intended to try and correct a Republican-created problem, but many of them did for the good of the country even though they knew it could cost them politically.

It looks like they want to tie lame duck Bush and Congress together. But McCain didn't exactly oppose the bill. So I'm not sure what the Repukes are doing - but I know you can't trust them.

41. Newt Gingrich Was Advocating Dumping The Bill On The Democrats |
|
However, both McCain and Obama have a vested interest in not presiding over the beginning of a new Depression, and McCain wanted to be seen as helping bring the bailout together according the Washington Post and Politico.
McCain screwed things up by delaying the bill, and pretending to support the House GOP when he was also supporting the bailout. In the White House meeting, Obama asked McCain point blank if he supported the bailout or the House GOP's mortgage insurance proposal, and McCain did not say anything. McCain's indecision help give the House GOP courage to blow up the deal.

My job is in the construction sector. Almost all the developers I have spoken with this past have put their projects on hold waiting to see what happens with this. The banks are NOT giving even good accounts any money.
I am pretty sure my job is hinging on this today. Whoo. boy. Trying to breathe.
