OH BOY! THE MARKET IS CRASHING! WOOHOO! |

Edited on Mon Sep-29-08 12:53 PM by Occam Bandage
Yeah! Fuck the wall-street fat cats! Watch their money disappear! Why, I'll bet some of them might lose 20, even 30% of their multibillion-dollar fortunes! Thank god the awful disgusting bailout package failed!
Oh, and to the millions of people who will lose their jobs if no bailout is passed and the economy is thrown into a depression: Sorry. You're collateral damage in our awesome class warfare. Oh, and sorry to everyone who'll lose their retirement savings. And everyone who wants to go to college or sell a house or do anything but bitch about "capitalism" on the Internet. See, we gotta keep our priorities straight.

People who have been just barely masking their glee over this affair infest DU. This angers people, but they can't take out their anger because the jackasses are usually just subtle enough that you can't punch them in the face.
In frustration, I mock up a satirical idiot. People who are already furiously angry at the real idiots are so eager to fire away that they don't stop to inspect the idiot for traces of sarcasm.

Look, sport, I understand that tensions are high and that people have a lot at stake, but there comes a time when you need to swallow your pride and admit you lept before you looked. I got the post the first time I read it, before any of O.B.'s second-paragraph wordsmithing...THAT being for the benefit of those like you who apparently need snark spelled out for them slowly, with a big red crayon.
But you go ahead and keep turning your sub-thread on this OP into a multi-chapter serial novel of your knee-jerkism. After all, it's your afternoon to kill.

As many, if not more than most, got it. Quite a number of those who didn't, I personally know to be severely irony-impaired. You happen to have joined their ranks. Oh well. It's not a life-threatening condition...so, relax.

As far as your new comment after calling people "fucking morons", now calling those people along with me of course "severely irony-impaired", that alone shows your intelligence.
I don't attack DUers or people I don't know. Your comment doesn't threaten me as I know it is another one of your simple asinine comments.

You may have left out overt name-calling, but it was an attack, nonetheless. Others who missed the OP's rub were not as charitable as you. Oh, and it seems that if you weren't so concerned with being perceived as irony-deficient, you wouldn't be getting your panties into such a twist.

Quite often the best sarcasm goes undetected. You telling people about good sarcasm is like Cheney telling me about peace. Clearly, it's not your strong suit.
everyone saw it for what it was, nothing but an asinine post.
Apparently not, as many of us got it just fine. You weren't one of them and made a kneejerk remark. We all do it sometimes, so why don't you just do the decent thing and apologize to the OP, or at least stop blaming others for your lack of sarcasm detection capabilities.

like you did, don't try adding on the next paragraph. A little honesty goes a long way also.
Never met you before, but didn't appreciate it. I and my wife will get through this OK, will lose money but there are a lot of people who will suffer because of the greed and corruption of others. However, nothing can be done about that now but can look at how we got here and hopefully prevent it from happening in the future. Hopefully; as there will always be greed.
However, this bill needs to get passed regardless if some asshole who helped cause it, might gain.

Even if you didn't get the sarcasm he's still on the same side of the argument you are. Yet even after finding that out you've yet to apologize for your extremely wrong, knee jerk comment. Why is so hard for you to that?
It's not even about the joke anymore. It's about you being grossly wrong about someone and not having the basic decency to admit that. Forget the joke and whether it's good sarcasm or not (which is like arguing over which is the best music or flavor of ice cream). Just be a decent human. What you said about the OP (and me, for that matter) was entirely, 100% wrong.

134. If we are on the same page, thats good. The trying to convince everyone |
|
about the sarcasm however is weak. Just to be done with this stupid posting, yeah, OK a weak attempt at sarcasm.
As far as apologizing, nothing to apologize for and have already posted to the poster my thoughts about this.
Nothing against anyone here but to be done with this if you say it is sarcasm then that is good.
Like I told him, we will do OK will lose or losing money but that will be gained back in time. But you have people who are in their retirement and they may not have enough time to make gains back. You have struggling workers with 401Ks and you have small businesses that have to meet payroll and may not be able to do that if they don't get this bill passed.
I realize there will be some greedy people who might make out on this deal but you can't punish the American worker for a few of the bastards.
That said, OK, nothing personal, been a bad day, I will accept your word about the attempt at sarcasm and lets leave it at that.
We probably are on the same side most of the time.

I certainly don't like the punish the people approach that I've seen from a few here today, which was why I liked the OP.
I'm beyond struggling myself, and when I was younger I had resentment towards anyone richer than me (which was most everyone). It's tough when you see people who only seem to care when it's their money flow being affected. In time I realized that was a wrong attitude to take. A lot of people well off (which itself is relative...someone making 30K is far better off then me, but way worse than most) do a lot of good things with that money, or just worked hard to get it. Whenever an issue like this comes up we see people who still haven't made that distinction yet. And of course there really is a lot of people who simply don't care about anyone less fortunate than them, feeding that resentment.
For me, I had to stop thinking that way because I can't root for bad things to happen to others to help a cause I believe in, even if that cause is crucial. There has to be a line we shouldn't cross, and I found mine.
And I'm sure we have many more things in common than we don't. :toast:

when it is posted sans the appropriate tag... FWIW I think we may be looking at a depression now :-/....I didn't like the bail-out bill, but I suspected that it was needed and fast. But then again, I don't know enough about any of this to have a really educated opinion on this. I am regretting not taking any courses in economics in grad school-would have helped in parsing all the jargon I am seeing thrown around. But, I think we might be in worse trouble now...The bill struck me as a necessary evil.

For those of you with your head up your ass whining about the edit ... FAIL. I'm not even familiar with Occam Bandage's writing and I recognized the sarcasm in the TITLE! Hint ... OH BOY! should have been your first clue. Failing that in the first paragraph ...
"Why, I'll bet some of them might lose 20, even 30% of their multibillion-dollar fortunes!"
C'mon people! Do the math ... jeez. All of that was there BEFORE the edit. If you didn't get it, you weren't looking. Quit beating up someone that's on your side. I see a whole lot of posts today saying the very things your piling on OB about, why aren't you slamming THEM?

Don't be driven by fear.
Yes, there is a crisis. Yes, all of the dire warnings by people here have substance - they are real.
No one advocates "doing nothing."
It is not a question of whether or not we face this crisis and take bold action. Do not believe that. Do not be driven like sheep into the abyss.
"This is preeminently the time to speak the truth, the whole truth, frankly and boldly. Nor need we shrink from honestly facing conditions in our country today. This great Nation will endure as it has endured, will revive and will prosper. So, first of all, let me assert my firm belief that the only thing we have to fear is fear itself — nameless, unreasoning, unjustified terror which paralyzes needed efforts to convert retreat into advance. In every dark hour of our national life a leadership of frankness and vigor has met with that understanding and support of the people themselves which is essential to victory. I am convinced that you will again give that support to leadership in these critical days."
"Yet our distress comes from no failure of substance. We are stricken by no plague of locusts. Compared with the perils which our forefathers conquered because they believed and were not afraid, we have still much to be thankful for. Nature still offers her bounty and human efforts have multiplied it. Plenty is at our doorstep, but a generous use of it languishes in the very sight of the supply. Primarily this is because the rulers of the exchange of mankind’s goods have failed, through their own stubbornness and their own incompetence, have admitted their failure, and abdicated. Practices of the unscrupulous money changers stand indicted in the court of public opinion, rejected by the hearts and minds of men."
"True they have tried, but their efforts have been cast in the pattern of an outworn tradition. Faced by failure of credit they have proposed only the lending of more money. Stripped of the lure of profit by which to induce our people to follow their false leadership, they have resorted to exhortations, pleading tearfully for restored confidence. They know only the rules of a generation of self-seekers. They have no vision, and when there is no vision the people perish."

129. You'll have to expound on that... |

...if you don't mind. Otherwise, your remark is just another meaningless bromide in the face of evaporating 401ks and college funds.
