Poll question: Check in: Do you know anyone who has been laid off in the last year?

I know two people who were laid off (from totally separate businesses) in the last 10 days.

2. Yup. My mom in FL. Might have to bring her up to Philly to live with us.
No work down there. And she works in the medical field, which tells you something.

12. I'm certain of it. Fortunately, I can probably pull some strings up here for her...
at HUP.

And if she stays in our spare bedroom, that's not much more of an expense. Well, I'm sure it will exact a toll in personal relationships living in such close quarters.

Oh well, such is life. Here's hoping she finds something in FL before her unemployment runs out.

4. No, but I know 3 who foreclosed on homes.
All by choice, wanted to walk away from the payments becasue the homes devalued so much, it was no longer worth it. They couldn't even get rent to cover the payments.

6. 160 workers in Arizona
16 years in the job, no warning, they were all just booted. Company had its credit lines shut down so they couldn`t operate. We do business all over the USA, this isn`t an isolated incident.

10. In the musical "Annie" there was a song called "We'd like to thank you, Mr. Hoover"
A large amount of folks who were doing well pre-depression sing about their downfall.

They'll be singing it about Bush in the future.

14. I'm very sorry Rainey.
How many did they lay off? What is the job market like in your area?

17. Thank you.
The plant started with about 1100-1200 people. There may be a couple of hundred left at this stage. My department went from about 20 or so per shift to 4 on our shift by the time I got the envelope.

And the funny thing is, the company had taken a whole lot of money from the city to increase the number of jobs they provided in the city. Not that they're giving any of that back.

Job market's not so hot. If I find anything in the field I've been working I'm either doing a lot more driving or I'll have to move. I applied to go back to school in the spring in the meantime.

16. I was laid off in April

along with 20 - 30 others at my plant. This followed a previous lay-off a couple of months before. I have 1 more week of unemployment ... possibly there will be an extension  For those of us without degrees this is going to be bad ... very bad
