Habitat project lets group escape convention whirl
BY ANDREW DEMILLO ARKANSAS DEMOCRAT-GAZETTE
....For (Arkansas Lt. Gov. Win) Rockefeller and other Arkansas delegates to the Republican National Convention, their work in the south Bronx on Tuesday was a welcome break from the pomp and ceremony inside Madison Square Garden and the tight security outside the convention hall.
More than two dozen delegates and alternates painted 13 homes under construction by Habitat for Humanity, a nonprofit housing ministry that builds homes for people in need.....

The project wasn’t lacking in partisan flair, however.
As delegates rode toward the homes, (Richard Wong, Habitat’s director of community partnerships) mentioned that President Bush once injured himself on a building project in Crawford, Texas.
"Purple Heart, Purple Heart," a couple of delegates yelled, a reference to a group questioning Democratic presidential candidate John Kerry’s service in Vietnam.
"I’ll stay away from that one," Wong said.
