Historical Question? How many candidates ran and lost the primaries, and then |
|
won their primaries years later, and then won the presidency?
I know that Nixon ran, but he was his party's nominee...and then lost to JFK. Then ran again and won.
But I'm asking about the position that McCain is in.

I don't think that any other dems have ever even won the nomination.

Bush the elder ran in '80 against Reagan, but I don't know if being VP counts, strictly...and Al Gore ran in 1988 and would have won in 2000 if not for the Supreme Court, but he was another VP; I don't think anyone who didn't have an interim term as VP has done it other than Reagan
