DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Republican presidential candidate John McCain, once renowned for his jocular sessions with journalists, appeared irritable and at times sarcastic in an interview in which he defended running mate Sarah Palin's experience and campaign ads critical of rival Barack Obama.

Meeting Tuesday with the editorial board of The Des Moines Register, McCain was asked why he picked the Alaska governor, someone "who doesn't have a lot of experience."

"Thank you, but I disagree with your fundamental principle that she doesn't have the experience," McCain replied before citing Palin's work as a PTA member, city council member, mayor and governor. "You and I just have a fundamental disagreement, and I am so happy the American people seem to be siding with me."

When it was suggested that Palin's lack of experience worried voters, McCain turned sarcastic.

"Really? I haven't detected that in the polls, I haven't detected that among the base," he said. "If there's a Georgetown cocktail party person who, quote, calls himself a conservative who doesn't like her, good luck. I don't dismiss him. I think the American people have overwhelmingly shown their approval."

He's getting cranky because he knows he's gonna lose.

13. Now that the bouce is over
I bet he sometime regrets the whole Palin thing. He know good and well she doesn't have the experience. It's not easy to keep lying when people are calling you on the lie all of the time.

McCain looked kind of drunk with power during The Bounce. I mean, at the rallies and everything. I'm sure that his campaign is telling him that everyone's "Just jealous!" heh

14. McCain knows he is losing and figures he might as well "let McCain be McCain."
Really, what does he have to lose? Except his self respect. And I am not sure that concerns him. After all he gave that away a long time ago when he threw in with George Bush for political gain, even though Bush trashed his reputation in 2000.

Denial is not just a river in Egypt.

This man is losing it, and I'm happy to say that it's only going to get worse at the GE goes on. I can't wait to see him really let loose!

24. That's a direct slap in the face of George Will, David Frum and other conservatives
in the media who have been critical of Palin. I'm sure they know that McCain's referring to them as conservative Georgetown cocktail party-goers. McCain is declaring war on members of his own party.

30. McCain is a kite in a strong gust.
The kite tied to it's spool floats and soars through an expansive stage in the sky until a large gust pulls some of the material from the frame. Slowly, the material is pulled back and the kite begins veering off it's normal looping and graceful course and starts to become erratic. As the tear in the material becomes larger, the person holding the spool of string loses control and the wind takes over, pushing the kite toward the ground. Reeling in the string only forces the kite on a faster track toward the earth, and letting more string out only lets the wind thrash the kite harder and pull it further from it's base.

The only result for a broken kite is that it slams down to the ground, material shredded, frame bent and likely broken, resembling nothing like the original kite that took flight, and landing very far from the point at which it was launched. If the wind is strong enough, the person holding the kite will break the string and let the wind take over completely, carrying the kite away forever.
