He's desperate to be the guy at the chalkboard explaining everything. He's desperate not to let Obama have the initiative -- the same sentiment that led him to suspend his campaign after Obama's overture for a joint statement of principles.
As soon as his camp heard Obama was going to speak, I'm sure they looked at their watches and determined whether there was time to get McCain there to speak as well.
Kinda stupid of them not to schedule him to speak the the first place, unless they stalled in order to make sure he spoke *after* Obama.
