Do not go into the gutter. McCain wants us to do that.
There is nothing John McCain would like better than for us to try to hurl strange associations and worthless stories at him from now the election. That's why he's bringing up the Ayers stuff. He wants to change the subject and desperately. Do not oblige him. The issue that got us here is the economy and it will keep delivering for us from now until the election. A good swiftboating operation needs a lot more time than they have. You have to start it early before voters have locked-in their preferences. It's too late now.

However, if we turn this into a pesonality contest, this race can tighten up in a hurry just like it did in August. Don't let them do it.

1. Simply telling the truth about McCain smells like a gutter.

6. There we go! Sic the 527s on McCain!
Meanwhile, Obama counterattacks with the truth and McCain's record on the economy, and keeps doing things like using words like "dishonorable" to describe McCain's campaign, and keep showing those pictures of McCain hugging George W. Bush.

3. Amen. That said, however,
I don't think we have to worry too much about Obama doing the wrong thing. As I keep saying, the guy has political perfect pitch--hits the right note every time.

4. Keep making the Bush - McCain link. That's what will win.
Do it over and over and over and over.

5. Agree, with a caveat. I think we have learned lessons from Kerry/Edwards election..
do not sit back and let them "swift boat" us again. We need to knock down these charges and knock them down quickly. Hopefully the media will do their job and call McCain/Palin out for the liars they are, not to mention the desperate measures they are resorting to.

11. Obama needs to knock the charges down
DU posting every thought they have on the topic only seems to promote the thinking & perhaps emboldens McCain whose trolls are here reading our responses.

8. Obama should continue to pummel McCain on issues
us blogbarains, the bathrobe brigade: not so much.

Not fighting back, staying above the fray, not fighting them on their level is what made Gore and Kerry's races competitive enough to steal. A big 'no thanks' to that failed strategy.

9. Too late - DU obsession with the Ayers story is starting to dominate discussion
Every person who has a thought on the topic now feels compelled to get their 2 cents in, thus rendering DU an agent of McCain. Oh, well - time to take a break.

12. Keating 5, Keating 5, Keating 5
If McLame wants to talk Ayers, it's open season on the Keating 5 scandal.

13. The truth isn't the gutter, but there's lots of truth about McCain
that looks as if it came from the gutter.
