Horrible editorial in today's newspaper/Obama pro-infantcide

Obama tainted by votes against abortion survivors

What does Sen. Barack Obama have against Gianna Jessen, a gifted 31-year-old woman who sings, composes, travels the world giving speeches, and runs marathons? Jessen had the tenacity to survive an abortion attempt. Obama voted four times as an Illinois state senator against providing care and protection to babies like Gianna who are born alive after an abortion.

Obama's votes on this matter contrast starkly to the entire U.S. Congress, which passed without dissent a 2002 federal law, the Born-Alive Infants Protection Act, to provide care and protection to abortion survivors. Obama is running fast to distance himself from his record, feigning outrage whenever anyone exposes it and spinning "defenses" at will.

SPIN: Given the chance, Obama would have voted for the Illinois Born-Alive bill if it had been the same as the federal law.

FACT: Illinois documents indisputably prove that Obama voted against a bill (Illinois SB 1082, March 2003) that was virtually identical to the 2002 federal law. FactCheck.org concluded that "...Obama voted in committee against the 2003 state bill that was nearly identical to the federal act he says he would have supported.".....

It's been discussed on our local newspapers forum, but this woman really has exaggerated this and lied without shame. I really don't know how to respond.

2. The lies are fairly easily dealt with but there's no way to get the truth out
at least not to the extent that these lies are out. Looking on line for the truth, I found loads of sites the spew the same nonsense - do the right wing nutters have people out there that just spew this crap all day to keep up the numbers on line?

A anti-abortion group is running an ad featuring a woman who says she survived a failed abortion and that "if Barack Obama had his way, I wouldn't be here." She's wrong. If she'd been born in Illinois, Illinois law would have protected her with or without the "born alive" legislation that Obama opposed and that this group supports. http://www.factcheck.org/elections-2008/born_alive_baloney.html

Obama's site answers it well but our local paper's forum only gives us 1000 charaters so his reply doesn't fit.

"Senator Obama strongly supports Roe v. Wade and a woman's right to choose. He believes that there is a moral and ethical element to this issue, and he believes that women do not make these decisions casually, but wrestle with them in consultation with their doctors, pastors and family. Senator Obama understands that some will disagree with him and choose not to support him, and he respects those with different opinions. But the recent attacks on Senator Obama that allege he would allow babies born alive to die are outrageous lies. The suggestion that Obama -- the proud father of two little girls -- and others who opposed these bills supported infanticide is deeply offensive and insulting. There is no room for these kinds of distortions and lies in this campaign. What Senator Obama’s attackers don’t tell you is that existing Illinois law already requires doctors to provide medical care in the very rare case that babies are born alive during abortions. They will not tell you that Obama voted against these laws in Illinois because they were clear attempts to undermine Roe v. Wade. They will not tell you that these laws were also opposed by pro-choice Republicans and the Illinois Medical Society -- a leading association of doctors in the state. And they will not tell you that Obama has always maintained that he would have voted for the federal version of this bill, which did not pose such a threat. The bills Senator Obama voted against in Illinois were crafted to undermine Roe v. Wade or pre-existing Illinois state law regulating reproductive healthcare and medical practice, which is why Senator Obama objected to them http://factcheck.barackobama.com/factcheck/2008/08/19/fact_check_born_alive_1.php

3. Same article that appeared in the Catholic Times
We had a person stop in headquarters with a copy of The Catholic Times, Serving the Catholic Community of the Diocese of La Crosse. He belongs to a local Catholic church but does not subscribe to this paper, it was sent to him unsolicited. He was very upset about this article and others that appeared in this publication. It's dated Thursday, October 2, 2008 Volume 84 No.20.
There is a little blurb saying that since they have extra funds they will be sending several editions out to registered Catholics as a thank you - can't have anything to do with trying to sway the election.
