Palin surrogates now claiming she's related to Princess Di and Roosevelt
The porcelain pitbull is certainly no Princess Di. Palin is an empty-headed psychopath who is full of herself and and full of shit. But, that's redundant, isn't it?

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Republican vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin is distantly related to the late Princess Diana and late U.S. President Franklin Roosevelt, genealogy experts said on Wednesday.

The governor of Alaska and the princess are tenth cousins, while Palin and Roosevelt are ninth cousins once removed, said Ancestry.com, online genealogists based in Provo, Utah.

The genealogical connections are not the first to gain attention in the U.S. presidential campaign. Last year, Lynne Cheney said she found while tracing her family roots that her husband Vice President Dick Cheney was a distant cousin of Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama.

Other researchers discovered Obama is distant cousins with actor Brad Pitt.

5. This is the kind of thing that comes out all the
time during election years.

What I can never understand is exactly how all that record-checking is done to trace back generation by generation and finding all that out.

6. The presidents' genealogies are all online
and so are many senators and other prominent people. If you have your genealogical info or another persons' then you can easily check to see if there is/are common ancestor(s). I found out by accident during the last election that I was related to both Bush and Kerry! I was looking up the surname "Dwight" and on that website it said Bush and Kerry both had a Dwight ancestor and since I have that same ancestor in my line, it made me something like a 10th or 12th cousin, several times removed to both Bush and Kerry. After finding that one ancestor in common, I found several more in common to both of them. But you know, half of America is related to them as well, so it's no big deal, just a fun thing to talk about.

As far as Governor Palin, once she became the VP pick, genealogists started researching her roots. Most info is in the public record nowadays, birth, marriage, death, property records, census records, etc., and most of it is online too, so it is much easier and quicker to research, many other people are researching similar family names and share info too. You can ask questions, connect and send info to people immediately too via the internet. In the pre-www days when I first started doing genealogy as a hobby, you had to go to local or big libraries (DAR, National Archives, Mormon Family History Library in UT, etc.), post ads in genealogy magazines, etc., when looking for info, etc.

The first website is good for checking to see if you have common ancestors with various famous persons:

7. I know who my four grandparents were.
They came over from Ireland around the turn of the 19th-20th Century. I have no idea who my ancestors were before them. So unless there's a genealogy out there that traces down to one of my grandparents, I'm not related to anyone famous.

12. I wouldn't be surprised
if someone in your family (distant cousins you've never met) have traced some of your ancestors back to Ireland. The way to get started is to get some family name record sheets and write down all the info you know (DOBs, DODs, Places born, married, died, etc.) and then talk to all of your older family members too to see what they can add, verify, etc. You never know when some little thing they say might help with some research later on.

After you get some surnames, google those names, e.g., for me, I have an ancestor named John Dwight, so when I was trying to find out some info on the Dwights, I googled "Dwight genealogy" that's where I found out inadvertently that I had common ancestors with Bush and Kerry. There are sooooooo many genealogy websites, some let you do some work on them and do research for free, some require a subscription fee for more services. Here are some links that might be helpful:

http://www.searchforancestors.com/record.html

http://www.irishorigins.com/

http://www.searchyourgenealogy.com/

http://www.ancestry.com/

http://govgenealogysearch.com/

I haven't paid to use any of the above's services so I can't vouch for any of them. If you were really interested, you could do research on your own first and post messages on bulletin boards. Then if you hit a dead end, by then you would probably have an idea as to which sources would be most helpful to you in searching and you could post a messages on some of the various genealogy boards re same.

Good luck! :)
