SHOULD CINDY MCCAIN BE FAIR GAME?....
October 9, 2008

SHOULD CINDY MCCAIN BE FAIR GAME?....Cindy McCain told reporters earlier this week that she believes Barack Obama has "waged the dirtiest campaign in American history." I didn't see video of the comment, but as I understand it, the wife of the Republican nominee managed to say this with a straight face.

Yesterday, Cindy McCain waded deeper into gutter, lashing out at Obama for opposing a war spending bill last year.

"The day that Senator Obama cast a vote not to fund my son when he was serving sent a cold chill through my body, let me tell you," she told a Pennsylvania crowd before introducing her husband and Republican VP candidate Sarah Palin.

"I would suggest Senator Obama change shoes with me for just one day. I suggest he take a day and go watch our men and women deploying," she also said, to boisterous cheers from the campaign.

Now, I have no idea whether Mrs. McCain knows better or not, but her sleazy attack has already been debunked. Indeed, according to this argument, John McCain also voted to cut off funding for our troops in the midst of a war. That's an inescapable conclusion -- McCain supported troop funding when he liked the conditions of the spending bill, and opposed troop funding when he didn't. As it happens, Obama did the exact same thing, only in support of different conditions.

<...>

But I have a tangential question: does this mean Cindy McCain is fair game for criticism? For the most part, candidates' spouses are supposed to off limits from political attacks. But this week Cindy McCain seems intent on entering the fray, and spreading some pretty sleazy and shameful lies.

So, does this put Mrs. McCain's controversies on the table? If she's going to be a partisan hack, lying to voters, should she be subject to pushback, just like other partisan hacks?

Yes!

1. Sure, but how does it serve me to discredit her? She's not running for anything.

7. Is she on the campaign trail, speaking at rallies and to the media, making sleazy attacks?
"how does it serve me to discredit her?"

Is that so hard to figure out?

4. To some degree yes - she interjected herself into the narrative
I believe that some surrogates or others in our party should take a careful aim at her comments and then bring up some issues that Ms. Beer Heiress is out of touch on.

10. It most definitely will.
People made the same claim about exposing Palin: that Dems had to be careful.

At this point, Cindy McLiar is a partisan hack peddling smear. She deserves to be exposed.

Edited on Thu Oct-09-08 09:17 AM by dkf
People watching her will realize that she is an unpleasant person who they do not want to have to see for the next 4 years.

That is the problem with having your only public exposure nodding your head behind your husband and spouting inflammatory rhetoric. She is making a very very bad impression when the public knows very little of her. I predict a spike in her unfavorables.

Michelle obviously isn't buying it. She was terrific on Larry King last night.

I hope to see Cindy smacked down for her BS on the blogs and by surrogates. The OP piece is heading in the right direction.

32. since we live about 80 miles from Nashville, I was interested how the crowd
interacted with the Obamas after the debate the other night. The McCains cut a trail ASAP, the Obamas mingled with the crowd for a long time afterward, and amazingly the camera stayed on them. Michelle's getting photo-ops, Cindys likely scrubbing her hands. Let Cindy talk all she wants, her body language and facial expressions tell it all.

He's a chickenshit mealy mouthed wimp.

Afraid to say these things to his face.

What a fucking pathetic worm he turned out to be.

And to think I actually used to sort of like him. God, what a fool I was back in 2000.

31. She chose to step up to the podium and speak into the microphone
She wasn't just introducing her husband or encouraging people to vote, she was lying to the crowd by saying Barack Obama doesn't support the troops. Two words: Fair game.
