Break their back, crush their spirits
by kos
Thu Oct 09, 2008 at 11:14:58 AM PDT

See, here's the deal -- we're going to win the White House, we're going to win big in the Senate, and we're going to rack up big gains in the House. Republicans know this and are preparing for the worst. Now think of 2004 -- we really thought Kerry was going to pull it off. Remember that? And remember how utterly devastated we were when Bush pulled it off? The pain was so much worse because we expected to win.

So with conservatives bracing for the worse, they won't experience the kind of pain we did. Not unless we deliver a defeat even worse than their worst nightmares. And I'll be honest with you -- I want them to hurt as much as we did. I want their spirits crushed, their backs broken.

So the way we do that is we deliver a defeat worse than they every imagined. We do that by winning states that have no business turning Blue -- like North Carolina, Georgia, Indiana, and so on -- states that were easy Bush victories in 2004. We do that by electing a 60-seat supermajority in the Senate. We do that by defeating their leadership, like Mitch McConnell in the Senate. We do that by defeating their heroes, like wingnut go-to hero John Shadegg. We do that by making sure a record number of Americans reject conservative ideology, leaving it utterly discredited.

The day after the election, I want to see an electoral battlefield littered with defeated Republicans, their ranks demoralized, their treasury in heavy debt, and no real leadership to take the helm. I want a vacuum so complete, that a bloody leadership battle between the neocons, theocons, and corporate cons shakes the GOP to its core, and leaves it fractured and ill-equipped to stymie the progressive agenda, much less ramp up for an even bleaker (for them) 2010.

4. I Wouldn't Wish That On Them
I remember how utterly horrible I felt following the 2004 election. When I saw that damn map with the red on every county Dubya won, I felt as if I didn't have a country.

I wouldn't wish that feeling of isolation on anyone.

11. Noble of you. But remember, they gloated and screamed "this is Bush country!"
I don't feel much compassion for the majority of these people anymore. Maybe that makes me a lesser person, but after what this country has suffered for 8+ years, I'm willing to wear that moniker.

Edited on Thu Oct-09-08 02:40 PM by michele77
I'm fucking ILL at what this country has become, and I'm not even living in the US at the moment. I want to go home to a country of hope, progress and for fuck's sake, some sanity!!!!!!!! I'm so gosh darned tired of feeling like a fucking outcast outside my circle of friends. I'm tired of struggling, of having shit health insurance, of worrying to death that my husband CANNOT get sick because his insurance is an abomination.

Let them suffer like the poor, the liberals, the underprivileged have suffered.
But they won't, because an Obama presidency wont let them, and that makes me happy.

EDIT: Replied to wrong post, sorry.

30. I'm 29 and I want the country my grandparents have been so proud of and served
I remember the stories they told of growing up in the Depression era and World War II. My grandfather fought bravely and heroically in Europe during World War II, my grandmother worked hard on the home front - because they believe in this nation and our leaders. The stories they told were emotional and sometimes heartbreaking, but there was always a sense of pride that no matter what, we are a great nation and can accomplish anything in the face of incredible darkness and despair.

I haven't seen a glimpse of that country, a utopia if you will, since I was in High School and my world view wasn't as wide as it is today. For the first time in my adult life, I feel like Obama and this party has given us the opportunity to be that nation again in the face of a horrible financial and political crisis.

49. I Still Want To Win
and I still think this country needs to win. I want a decisive victory because I don't want anyone feeling like the results were somehow invalid. I doubt they will accept it, but still, I want it to be legit (Obama to have a true majority in the electoral college and popular vote)

But, when it is done, I have no intention of rubbing their noses in it. I want to be a good sport - gracious in victory.

52. I agree.
1) I saw a bumper sticker after the '04 election that said something like, "Dear President Bush. On Nov. 3, 56 million of us voted for a very different America. We are not going away." Well, neither are the people who vote for McCain in this election. We'll still have to live and work side by side with them. That'll be much harder if we smear it in their faces.

2) Being mean and vindictive is the Fundamentalist Republican brand, and I refuse to buy into that worldview.

3) It's just bad karma to wish ill on others. :)

57. I know how you feel, I try to be compassionate towards everyone.
However, most of these people refuse to acknowledge that they are responsible for the embarrassment of a country the US has become under Bushco. The pain of these vile humans getting their "feelings hurt" or "feeling isolated" is laughable compared to the pain of the families of soldiers who have lost their lives fighting an unjustified war in Iraq, the pain of innocent Muslims who are being held captive, tortured, and murdered, and the pain that we are all starting to feel as our economy is rapidly deteriorating. Not only do they refuse to acknowledge what they have done - they continue to cause suffering through their abhorrent rallying strategy of inciting hatred towards Obama (read: African Americans and Muslims). They are merely reaping what they have sown. You can be sure that whatever they reap will not be nearly enough.

62. I would and I do.
No mercy!

What made it worse in 2000 and 2004 was knowing that more people went to the polls with the intention of voting for our side, but their side *somehow* managed to walk away with the prize. And they added insult to injury by rubbing it in and gloating, as though they'd won in a landslide. Bush crowed that he had a mandate. They are scum to me. Unworthy of my empathy.

In reality, I would like to see the Democratic Party discredit the ideology of Conservatism:

*De-Regulation,

*Privatization of Government responsibilities (Prisons, Military, Law Enforcement, Health, Communications, International Trade, Transportation, and Energy)

*"Free" Trade

*Consolidation/Conglomeration of Business

Unfortunately, too many Democrats are feeding at that trough.

I've been talking up the idea to my generally non-political friends and family that if they are unhappy with the last 8 years, the economy, the war, Katrina, environment, torture, the constitution, the courts etc, etc, they should send a message conveying their rejection of the way things have been run by not voting for a single republican on election day: not for president, not for congress, not for state office, not for local dog-catcher. I'm getting support for the idea ranging from thoughtful to "hell yes!". I'd like to crush the republicans out of existence for what they've done to our country.

who doesn't recognize when it's time to show some spine.

When you're being bullied by a horde of merciless thugs and bigoted swine, you have to be able to mobilize a thundering form of righteous wrath. That is very different from vindictive hate & fear, but destructive all the same. The Republican conceit needs to be wiped off the faces of everyone still spouting the fraudulent ideology.

Wrath is an appropriate response under the circumstances, methinks.

59. My heart is still hurting from Coup 2000, and I will never, ever
forget or forgive.

Then they robbed me of hope in 2004.

Frankly, my heartache and my anger is so totally meshed it is literally at times, too unbearable.

I don't think those people could even possibly feel anywhere near what I've felt. Those people are made up of different stuff than me. Here are a few consistent differences: I am tolerant and open-minded, I care about my fellow man, I am willing to share, I prefer peace, I am not greedy, I would die for every word in our Constitution and Bill of Rights.

Other differences: I don't throw a rock and hide my hand, I don't lie to make others look bad, I don't take from others who are in more need, I don't blame others for my troubles, I don't stack the deck, I don't cheat,

I also read and believe in critical thinking.

I am also freaking sick and tired of having to endure my government being hijacked by organized crime that was elected by ignorant American voters who believe every fucking lie a politician feeds them.

So yeah, if they can feel some pain and discomfort, I'm all for it. But I doubt they will ever feel anything near what I and the rest of you have felt.

60. It calls to mind the following exchange from Conan The Barbarian
Edited on Fri Oct-10-08 05:17 AM by Frumious B
Mongol General: Hao! Dai ye! We won again! This is good, but what is best in life?
Mongol: The open steppe, fleet horse, falcons at your wrist, and the wind in your hair.
Mongol General: Wrong! Conan! What is best in life?
Conan: To crush your enemies, see them driven before you, and to hear the lamentation of the women.
Mongol General: That is good! That is good.

I'm with Kos and Conan on this.

"Kos" is the name of the god who the barbarian Fafhrd worships.

63. Agreed!! I don't want a victory
Edited on Fri Oct-10-08 06:31 AM by FlaDem83
I want a rout, a landslide, a massacre. I won't rub it in, but I want it to be AS CLEAR AS POSSIBLE, that Obama won and that this country is not going to peverted and decimated by the Republican brand anymore. I want Obama to have the political capital Bush only dreamed of.

66. No. No. No.
That is not what we want. That is not what Obama wants.

I want them to change. Nobody would like to see them hurting like I would. I would LOVE revenge. I would love to see Rove in solitary confinement. But no!

I want them to change. Would I rather have Bush hung, or would I rather have Bush see the light and become a good human being? Think about it!

We're going to win. Think about winning AND having them come over to our side. The side of light and honesty and goodness.

No, we don't want to crush spirits. We are one. It's not a perfect world, and right now we are far from one. We're killing Iraqis. But even under the very worst of circumstances, we can move in a good direction. And I'm not smoking something- I've just lost the second of my life partners. I'm grieving. And don't wish me well. It's life. We all go through it. I just am very clear about where we go from here. Look at Senator Byrd. Look at what happened when Wallace was shot. Arianna Huffington. John Dean.

Let's win twice. Bring them to our side. There's too much revenge. Be big.
