Who's the worse candidate, Goldwater or McSame ? |
|
I'm too young to remember Goldwater. All I know is Johnson ran ads about a nuclear holocaust due to Goldwater.

Goldwater thought McSame was a piece of shit so I would give Barry a point for recognizing an asshole when he sees one.

15. It did...fun fact though |
|
The "Daisy" ad wasn't pulled due to any negative reaction to its message but rather because the presentation made some viewers uncomfortable because the manner in which the camera zoomed into the girl's eye and then showed the nuclear explosion made it appear that the girl was exploding. This is according to one of my Comm professors. I love these odds and ends of history.

If it wasnt for the infamous LBJ "flower" ad Goldwater actually had a chance to win.

Ask Hillary -- she was a self-described 'Goldwater girl." Goldwater would have had a chance if he had run later. The reigning philosophyhs been much more sympathetic to him after 1980. I'm glad he didn't win, but he didn't have a streak of the crazy that most conservatives now seem to have.

were very conservative but on a personal level he was a good human being. He detested the mix of religion and politics and is likely turning over in his grave over what has transpired in the Republican Party. Compared to McCain he was a saint.

13. Ask me on November 5th. |
|
I will say that campaigns were more serious then, and certainly (from my 12-year-old viewpoint), not as ubiquitous or overwhelming.
I think Goldwater was probably a more reliable, statesmanlike person than McCain, but he was running against a political genius and probably never had a chance.

14. From what I've read of Goldwater, he was a helluva guy. |
|
Don't agree with all of his politics, but he was no neo-con fascist, that's for sure. I'm sure the campaign he was in back in the 60s was ugly, but it was probably a trip to a Buddhist monastery by comparison to this bullshit we're facing now.

20. I actually met him once, just a year or two before he died. |
|
He was on the Board of a company I worked for and was standing outside the building when I left. A lady I worked with was concerned about him so I went and asked him if he needed a ride somewhere. He said no, thanked me for the offer and made some comment about how I knew him. I told him I grew up in AZ, and he replied then why the hell are you over here? (California) He had quite an attitude but in a friendly sort of way so I said, too many damn conservatives over there. He gave me a look for a second then said, yeah my daughter is a damn liberal too. All of it was very good natured, and believe me, when I had to drive some of the other hard core assholes on the board they were far from friendly.

21. Goldwater was very hawkish in his pres campaign |
|
was very naive about national campaigning and Johnson used this to his advantage. But the race was really a non-event, in the aftermath of the JFK assassination the Dems were a lock.
In many ways the Goldwater campaign was much like McGovern's except from the other side - both were lost cause campaigns that had much more effect as ideological crucibles for their parties. They lost but inspired.
McCain's shitstorm is simply the worst way to lose - he stands for nothing. His only inspiratio is for racist morons - years from now people are going to look back at this time and wonder WTF was all that Ayers/middle name stuff and why did anyone care?

I remember Goldwater, and from that and everything I've read since, he was at least a very Honorable man. He was also a true conservationist and cared about the environment. McCain has been an asshole his entire life, this is not a new man, has always been this way.

Is that McCain took over Goldwater's senate seat, some 22 years ago.
Trivial I know, but if this is an Obama landslide win... the irony is only compounded!

27. McCain, far and away. |
|
1964 is an election worth understanding because it's really a model of all those that followed.
McCain had a choice of either being the last candidate of the old and the failed, or the first candidate of a new version of the Republican party. He made his choice.
FYI, the daisy countdown ad was played once, on one network, then pulled. It never mentioned Goldwater. All other replays were from news coverage, or coverage of the coverage, or coverage of the...echo.

Goldwater was considered a batshit crazy right wing extremist in his time (hence the infamous "daisy" ad from 1964). He'd probably be "left" of most DLC'ers today, let alone Republicans.
