Remember the Secret Service was investigating some of the hate speech coming during the rallies. I think they told him that inciting crowds makes their job of protecting all the candidates more difficult - including protecting him and Palin, as well as Obama.

...but I think it may have had more to do with McCain shitting his pants realizing he could be fingered as having stirred the pot which may have led some nutjob(s) to try and harm Obama. McCain may have envisioned himself as being culpable in inciting someone to commit a crime.
