Something is unhinged here
Maybe it's just McCain. I don't know. But something's gone off the tracks.

The GOP is fleeing their sitting President. Palin is holding rallies that look like they're going to turn into a Beer Hall Putsch. McCain is acting... well... weird. Saying "you don't have to be afraid of Obama" and then reminding people he hangs out with Ayers. Meanwhile the President tells us all to be calm and not sell our stocks.

I don't know. It just feels like McCain and company were expecting something to happen, but not this.

4. Yeah, I'm not Chicken Little-ing
I'm not saying we're walking into some Rovian trap. I don't know. It's like the part of the Sorcerer's Apprentice when the brooms start taking over the workshop and Micky doesn't know what to do; that's the feeling I get. The GOP made some Faustian pact a decade ago and payment has come due. It's like I'm waiting for the statue of the Commandatore to break through the wall now or something.

I can't put my finger on it. I mean, anytime a campaign is losing, you can say "something has gone wrong" for it. But something has gone really, really wrong, and this doesn't feel like just an electoral loss. I remember the Dole/Kemp campaign in '96; that just felt like a team that new they were going to lose. This is... I don't know... different. Like they've opened a bottle and are trying to get the genie back in. I wish I could be more specific about this feeling I have.

7. Yeah the right is acting REALLY bizarre. But we know that they are categorically cowards
always afraid of one boogeyman or another. I wonder if all of the fear isn't driving them completely batshit.

26. Good point. They drove that fear into their base until they became an angry mob
and now they are scared of what they created. Funny, I just finished reading a book about Guns and Roses and the same thing happened to them, they kept inciting crowds until one day it snapped and all hell broke loose.

28. Yeah famous one in St Louis.. place was destroyed and a stage rush
in Ireland where 2 people died. There is video of the St Louis place after the riot. Just type "Guns and Roses" and "riot" into you tube. I know a couple roadies who were on that St Louis gig and said they were in fear for their lives. The Palin, McCain rally's of the last few days are eerily similar in tone. It was getting out of hand.

10. Yeah, that's what my broker said when I spoke with him last week.
:eyes:

He's a good friend of mine. Not too terribly great which is why we never put all of our investments with him. He said the stock market is sooo low and it's the time to buy, buy, buy. I said "no fucking way" and moved my (pitiful) IRA into something ultra safe. I don't have time, energy or enough savings to gamble during this crazy ass time.

I believe that people who are watching this very, very closely. By the minute and who are experienced dealers, will probably make out like bandits timing their buy/sell. But the rest of us are screwn.

9. Cause and effect
See, it's one of those sciency things that they don't believe in, but in the actual real world, there is cause and effect.

I mean, it's not like our nation is in dire straits in almost every respect, and it's not like the uber wealthy haven't totally completed their looting of the national treasure, I mean, they've done their damage and these are now the results.

Results being that there is only a fraction of their "base" left who cannot connect the dots, the cause and effect.

It should be the other way around, that most people (like most here at DU) have seen this coming and were surprised that it took so long and that it wasn't obvious to everyone.

I know, too many double negatives to make sense, but eh, it's been a long day.

I guess it's like someone who goes on some sort of a binge and then wakes up with a hangover -- that's essentially what has happened.

11. Answers
1) George W. Bush is about to go down as the WORST President in History. He will have a legacy worst than Hoover who made the Great Depression worst (Coolidge actually was mostly responsible) and he started a war that we could never possibly win. He has the legacy of LBJ for War and Hoover for economics. The GOP is of course going to run away from this and try to was their hands of his Presidency.

2) Palin is a clueless idiot a bigot and probably believes she's going to preside over Jesus's return and personally greet the savior in Jerusalem soon. She also actually grows a Penis and gets a boner thinking about all the people she dislikes for political and personal reasons being judged and thrown into eternal torture. Her God is the God of punishment. Very old Testament angry God. She is a probably a Sadist and has a Narcisistic Personality Disorder. Hopefully tommorow Philadelphia greets such a person appropriately.

3) McCain is 72 years old and in moderately poor health and being asked to keep the schedule of a 45-60 year old man in good health. He also probably knows bearing the Republican base being wrong and all Democrats being raptured he is going to lose this election. He's being asked to run it out for 3 weeks pretty much knowing he is probably going to lose and lose in a landslide of Mondale/McGovern/Carter proportions. History is going to brand him a loser for first losing to the idiot and than to Obama. He is going to lose states that 2 years ago if you said that they would vote for a Black Liberal Democrat you would laugh in the person's face.

4) George W. Bush is trying to delay what he knows is coming which is DOW 5000-6000 and the coming depression or very long recession that is going to follow the mess he created economically so that maybe some people blame the next guy for some of the problems. He's destroyed his entire Families legacy going back 2 generations and ensured none of his relatives will ever serve in high office again.

So are the GOP acting wierd. Yes because the last time their party was in this situation was 1932 and a brilliant Govenor from NY came and fixxed things...which they insisted on breaking starting with Reagan and ending with Bush II.

31. Excellent summation, Jake3463...
...you've nailed all the salient points. When I think of Bush, I always think of that Herbert Hoover quote as he was leaving office: "We are at the end of our rope."

And, of course, Roosevelt was left to pick up the pieces.

12. I think they are genuinely confused.
They are used to winning and expected to be 10 points ahead by this time instead of ten points behind.

In fact.... they WOULD be ahead by now were it not for the economy. Which they cannot control.

So what's happening now is what happens when they go off the script. Panic in some of their ranks; rage elsewhere. There's a whole lot of mixed messaging going on.

Seriously, before the conventions the repubs prayed for rain during Obama's speech, and the weather was bee-yoo-tee-ful. Then during the repub convention, there was a hurricane.. hee hee. Now, supposedly Palin sees herself as "a modern day Esther"... well maybe she is in a weird kind of way. She is saving our country by turning everyone away from the repubs and towards Obama, lol.

God works in mysterious ways, His wonders to perform;)

because they look like they're about to get slaughtered down ticket as well.

Bush has driven the republican brand name into the shitter, as he will likely go down as the worst president ever.

Meanwhile, McCain is still playing around in MN and IA (wtf? He'll never win there!), while he should just be playing defense in OH, VA, FL, MO, NC, IN, CO...and maybe a few more states. It's obvious they're feeling nervous since Palin is out there in WV and NE for God's sake.

And by most accounts, McCain has no ground game in many states. This really is one of the most ineptly managed campaigns I've seen. It's a complete mess. His judgment about everything has proven to be just God awfully terrible. The Palin pick displays how little seriousness he gave this. He's rash, impulsive, and as president would drive this country into the ground the way he did to five planes!

...there's one thing that can change that paradigm. If we can get an overwhelming majority in congress, all bets are off for the repugs, because we can get legislation through that can make a difference. I think it was the repug party who told McCain to cool his jets. They fear Obama's coat-tails.

37. I've never heard of a campaign so lop-sided.
On the Dem side, Obama and staff are doing everything right. They're running an honorable campaign and not falling into any traps. Money is flowing like water.

On the GOP side, they are falling apart, crumbling and in disarray. No coherent message, no vision, nuthin'. Most of their voters seem to be no-Obama types.

It's a wonder.

We have incredible unity and have had since Obama won the nomination. McCain sort of fell into his nomination, sat around doing little about it all spring, then started running this half-assed campaign all summer. October was supposed to be the "smear Obama big-time" month, but now the economy is taking all the headlines. And anyway it is far too late; people already know Obama. The only ones left listening are those too far on the right to objectively consider voting Dem anyway.
