9. Oh, this one is so wonderful, too! I loved the people in the passing
gondolas cheering them on!

The opening guy was so touching -- hope for not just the people of America, but for the whole world.

10. Thanks for this! I made the Venice Carneval back in Feb.
I didn't even know it was Carneval. Took the train from Rome (a beautiful 6-hour ride).

When I checked into the hotel in Venice, the clerk said: "You know, this is the last night of Carneval..."

Grazie!

I dumped my bags in the room, walked outside, got on a bus and went downtown. (I was staying "on the mainland," about a 15-minute bus ride from Piazza Roma. But buses stopped right outside the hotel, every 15 minutes.)

Forgot to bring a map and had never been to Venice in my life. I just followed groups of interesting-looking people in costumes. That strategy worked well, since it took me to the 2 main party hang-outs: St. Mark's Plaza and the Rialto Bridge.

What a great city. It rises out of the water like a dream. Everyone was friendly and welcoming. One of the first characters I ran into was a little girl, all swaddled up in some fancy medieval princess dress. The little ham actually curtsied when I took her picture. I spent a few minutes talking to her grandmother, who was escorting her around and stuffing her with junk food. (Some things ARE the same in all cultures around the world!)

If you're interested in reading a history of Venice, check out J.J. Norwich's A History of Venice. Detailed, lively, and fantastically snarky in places.

e.g., Norwich describing the legal punishment of a Venetian noblewoman who had a...lively bedroom reputation: She was exiled, rather inappropriately, to the island of Lesbos.
