Woman puts Obama "baby killer" sign in her yard...
Edited on Sat Oct-11-08 11:04 AM by TwoSparkles
"Ankeny resident Michelle Schadler said Friday she has refused to take down a Barack Obama-Joe Biden sign to which she added the words “Baby Killer.”"

Schadler, 38, a Republican, said the president of her homeowners association asked her in an e-mail to remove the sign from her yard, citing the association’s policy banning signs. He wrote that he received complaints about the sign, which some found offensive.

“I had a John McCain sign up for three weeks and never heard from anybody,” Schadler said, noting that other neighbors have political signs up, as well.

(snip)

She said she put up the sign because she believes abortion to be an important, if touchy, issue that ought to be debated.

Schadler said she’s “not taking it down until they prove to me that the rule … is being enforced across the board.”

So..................what's the worst that could happen to me if I took her sign? She lives a block from me.

20. I think they're pointing out that apparently ALL babies are not considered sacred by republicans.
Only the ones inside the bodies of American women.

30. Isn't voting against healthcare for children the same as being a baby killer?
John McCain doesn't support healthcare for Children
John McCain wants children to die
John McCain is a baby killer

It's an easy conclusion to come too

42. One would think so
but in Republican world what they really mean is killing fetuses is bad, neglecting the needs of actually born babies is okay.

Just once when some sap gets up at a McCain rally and asks about protecting the "unborn", I wish someone else would ask about protecting the "born".

31. It's up to you......what do you want to do?
My point is that the issue of killing babies is merely by association with a situation, it is indirect and not primary to either individual....so, let's give them one of their own examples.

12. Did everyone in the Illinois State legislature....
..vote against this bill?

I must admit that I don't know anything the details on this bill.

I'm assuming that many law makers assumed that this was a junk bill--and
ridiculous to vote on it--because it's all ready law that you can't kill
infants.

It would be a ridiculous law.

8. I'd say that unless the "no signs" rule is being enforced evenly, she has the right to her sign.
She does not, however, have the right to expect that anyone will take her seriously.

25. No, actually she doesn't. In 99% of HOAs the law says that "offensive" behavior is not allowed.
Let me explain. Most HOAs (probably the majority) have rules that allow political signs by law, and also discuss what other types of signs are allowable. Fine.. her political sign is allowed. HOWEVER.. 99% of all HOAs have a CC or R that states that NO homeowner or renter there can create an "offensive" situation for other residents. The point being that you cannot use the sign rule to post a sign of dead puppies, or racist slogans, or ANYTHING that any neighbor finds "offensive" Built into HOA rules is the concept that every resident is allowed to enjoy their property, and you are not allowed to do anything offensive or noxious that takes away from that.

All it takes is one neighbor to complain to the Board that this is offensive, for them to be able to ask her to remove it. It's libelous, actually. So yes, you are allowed a political sign, but you are NOT allowed to disturb your neighbor's enjoyment of their house (which is what she is doing because it is obviously visible from other homes.) the CC&Rs are not just little rules.. they run with the property and you sign on for them when you buy the house.

Obama has never "killed a baby", so her sign is NOT a political sign. It's personal and libelous.

33. You're right that the sign is libelous and offensive to boot.
The HOA should say that then, instead of pointing to a rule that prohibits any sign at all and giving her the opening to say they aren't enforcing the rules evenly.

15. Heres's what I'm thinking..................
An Obama volunteer called me yesterday and he said he had lots of Obama signs.

I say we do something positive. As much as I'd like that sign gone, it would be wrong to take it.

Why don't we do something positive? Why don't we politely canvass her neighborhood--giving away
Obama signs?

If there are lots of Obama signs in the yards on her street----her sign will fade into the background.

Plus, this gives a bit of backfire to what she has done.

What say you?

I'm going to call that volunteer and see how many signs he could give to this effort.

13. She may be an obnoxious dumbass, but she's right.
If the rules aren't being applied equitably, then the HOA is wrong. We wouldn't want an HOA saying McCain signs are allowed but Obama ones aren't.

Free speech is free speech. We don't get to pick and choose.

21. I've been in HOAs. there ARE rules that prohibit things considered "offensive" by neighbors.
There are sign regulations, such as size, and political signs have to be allowed.. HOWEVER... you cannot put up a sign on your lawn that.. say.. accuses a neighbor of being a rapist, or depicts dead fetuses. There are rules, but most HOAs have the 'right to enjoy your property' rules that come with it. And HOA rules run with the title of the house, and you agree to them when you buy in that area.

So she is wrong.

37. I'm with you. "If a tree falls in the forest, and no one is there to hear it, does it make a sound?"
Somebody has sure managed to take OUR yard signs, unbeknownst to us. Are your neighbors old farts? If so, they'll never hear you. Now, on the other hand, if they have a spotlight shining on the sign and are sitting out in the yard with a shotgun and a pitbull that is foaming at the mouth, I might reconsider.

27. I would tell her: Bush had 6 yrs of total power-he did nothing to stop abortions,
but did everything to destroy this nation's moral standing and economy.

Since abortion seems to be the only issue you care about, consider this:

If neither party is going to end abortion, why not stick to the party that has a track record of having LOWER overall abortion rates (Democrats) rather than the one that says one thing as abortion rates skyrocket?

Why not stick to the party that will try to prevent unwanted pregnancies from occurring in the first place by giving women access to education and birth control?

Not only that, but I noticed that you don't make more than 250,000 / year. Wouldn't it be better to vote for the party that will make you better off financially?

why don't you put a sign up in your yard that says "Michelle Schadler is an extremist nutjob."
or some similar type of thing calling her out.

Maybe you can enlist some neighbors to do the same thing and embarrass her out of it rather than steal the sign....she'll just make another one and you will put her back in the newspaper again.
