Though small in size, Delaware big on Biden

By Maureen Milford, USA TODAY

WILMINGTON, Del. — In this tiny state, where residents can run into their congressman at Home Depot, nearly everyone has a story about Sen. Joe Biden.

Take Mary Hartnett, 72, of Wilmington. She was walking home from church in 1977 when a purse-snatcher struck. Biden, who was driving by, jumped out of his car and hot-footed it after the culprit, she says, running through backyards and scaling fences. The thief dropped the pocketbook. The next day, Hartnett sealed it in plastic and put it in her cedar chest.

"I really thought some day he would become president and I would get him to sign it," she says.

Now, Hartnett is waiting to get her purse signed by a vice president. Such personal connections between voters and Biden could explain why many in Delaware, which is less than 2,500 square miles and has fewer than 900,000 people, are proud that he was tapped as the running mate of Democratic presidential hopeful Sen. Barack Obama.

Biden to the rescue!!
Wooohooo!

*******

So we have a Presidential candidate that helps a newlywed travel overseas to see her spouse AND
a Vice-Presidential candidate that goes after a purse snatcher . . .

"Ladies and gentlemen" we are going to have two true heroes in the Whitehouse :)

8. Biden is the most nationally prominent Delawarean
Seriesly, since Caesar Rodney.

Maybe Delaware historians can correct me, but I don't think any Delawarean has been this near the Presidency. The 3 electoral votes were too few and we always accepted that we'd never see a Delawarean become President or VP.

So we're still in shock and totally amazed that Obama picked him!

Famous Delawareans

Valerie Bertinelli actress, Wilmington
Robert Montgomery Bird playwright, author, New Castle
Henry S. Canby editor, author, Seidel
Annie Jump Cannon astronomer, Dover
Felix Darley artist, Claymont
E. I. du Pont industrialist, Wilmington
Henry Heimlich surgeon, inventor, Wilmington
Wilham Julius Johnson basketball player, Wilmington
Howard Pyle artist, author, Wilmington
John Phillips author, Wilmington
George Read jurist, signer of Declaration of Independence, New Castle

(on edit)

Most of these people aren't actually famous, of course. But then Delaware is basically two rural counties and a suburb. There's no shame in having never heard of Henry Canby.

But surely you know who Valerie Bertinelli is!

12. And DuPont....and from what I understand, they are arch-enemies of Biden's.
He doesn't let them put their corporate buildings on the shoreline of DE.

14. You forgot George Thorogood
When I went to college out of state, several people, when I told them where I was from, said, "That's where GEORGE is from!"

But politically speaking, I don't think we've had a bigger person than Biden. There's never been a President from Delaware, and I don't think there's ever been a VP from Delaware.
