It all depends on how you define "free trade". For many countries trade is one way out of poverty. If they have control of their own production, if they sell it on equal terms on a world market and if the money they earn is brought back to their own country, they will improve their standard of living.

Being a protectionist and stick to American made products only might be "fair" to some American workers, but it's definitely not fair to workers in the rest of the world.
