I Need Some Information. While Canvassing This Week-end I Went To
a home of a "registered Democrat" on my list and thought I was going to get a positive response. After I introduced myself and what I was doing, this woman started ranting and raving about how she was voting for McLoonery! She was livid, telling me she always voted for Democrats, but WOULD NOT vote for Obama. Mentioning Rezko, Ayers and the usual crap that comes from Repukes, so I figured it was time to get to the next house. As I turned to leave she came out of her door and asked me why I would vote for a Socialist!! I could have told her that Bernie Sanders runs as a Socialist and has won every time, and that I personally was closer to a socialist than most some Democrats, but didn't.

Then she continued and wanted to know if I had read Obama's college thesis. So I googled it, but it seems that most of the information was about Michelle's thesis and I wasn't able to find information on Barack's thesis. Don't get me wrong, that was over 20 years ago and even I have changed my mind on issues from time to time. But what I would like to know, just in case I run across this again, what is there about HIS thesis that has her so riled up??

Also, I live in a super RED county and Obama is actually leading in the polls here, but her vitriol was quite astounding. As I starting walking toward the next door she actually came out in her yard and called me a COMMUNIST! I didn't even turn around and kept walking.

She didn't seem that unhinged at first, but she was ON FIRE about her accusations. I DID want to ask her WHY she wasn't out canvassing for McCain, but felt it wasn't worth my time.

Can anyone enlighten me??

1. Just a guess but
there are lots of people who don't normally vote in primaries but will occasionally do so if a friend, acquaintance or relative is running for office. So if the friend is a Democrat and they vote in the primary the records will show that voter as a Dem even though they may in reality be right wing Republican. That is probably what you ran into. Either that or just a plain racist looking for excuses not to vote for Obama

2. not sure what you need to be enlightened on - she's a fucking idiot
how's that?
I have been amazed when what seem to be normal people spew the Repug vile. I often ask them if they have checked these things out. They usually give Fox as their verifier.

3. She's listening to Rush
So of course she has about half the information (or less) on all of the issues she brought up.

She is certainly referring to Michelle Obama's undergraduate thesis, which was about white privilege at Princeton.

As far as I know, Obama didn't write a thesis as an undergrad, and of course they both went to Law School, so they wouldn't have written theses for law degrees.

Sounds like she is one of those racists who are trying to convince themselves that it's not about race.

4. I'd bet $50 that she is only a registered Democrat because Rush Limabugh told her to
so she could vote in the Primary. It happened in Ohio, and I am sure it happened everywhere. There's no way she's a real Democrat or even any sort of liberal or progressive if she called you a Socialist or was full of nothing but RW lying points. I guarantee it.

I know a guy down here on a music board who is the same way - claims to be an Obama supporter, but I've yet to hear him say one positive thing about Obama or Democrats in general, and always seems to ignore or not know about McCain's problems. He is so obviously getting his info from Rush and Drudge, that it's almost painful - or would be were it not so obvious and funny.

Ignore her - she is likely a mole. On the other hand, you should be more prepared to dispute what they say, so take this as an opportunity to not be surprised next time. And also, be optimistic - I don't think as many new Dems are Operation Chaos dittoheads as Rush claims - it's another double blind end run mindfuck he's dreamed up to mess with us.

5. If every state-wide or national politician was held accountable
for anyone they ever came in contact with, no one would ever get elected. Republicans typically come in contact with racists, anti semites and Nazi sympathizers. From the sound of it, you would be wasting your time arguing with her anyway. She is afraid of black people.

6. Just A Little More Information About Her Being A Dem Or Not... Here In Florida
you HAVE to register as either a Democrat or a Repuke, and the sheet they give you has stats about voting record, political affiliation and what information they want us to find out. She CLEARLY voted 3 for 3, so she clearly voted in the last 3 elections here. I'm not sure if that is the last 3 Presidential elections, but feel it's the last 3 elections we've had locally. Either way, she DOES vote, and she has voted as a Democrat.

I suppose some relatives have gotten to her, or Limp balls or whatever, but somehow she must have gotten some information about his thesis. She is the ONLY person I've ever heard speak about this. I don't watch FOX and rarely watch MSM, but have been watching CNN & MSNBC lately because of all the election coverage. And I do like K.O. and Rachel Maddow (a bunches) and Tweety has even found his way back to his Democratic roots. So, other than C-Span I prefer MSNBC.

Has CNN or MSNBC covered this issue... I really don't know, and can't say I've heard anything in the past two weeks.

And YES, she sounded like a real NUT CASE!! You HAD to be there, wish I had a video camera!!

8. Well, I Didn't Argue AND Did Move On... I Guess If Anyone Else Says
anything like that to me, I might ask THEM what it says, because I clearly didn't find anything when I Googled. Part of me is GLAD I ignored her, but PART OF ME just wanted to to to... well stick my tongue out at her.

Can't really say here what I wanted to do, but think about it! Mostly I take the "kill 'em with kindness" route. Just didn't like her calling me a Communist!

10. If your not being called a communist your not doing your job

When I was 16 I worked in progressive Republican campaigns and got called communist by the Republicans - of course my McGovern sticker on my car may have provoked them lol.

12. She's a decoy
I've heard this happen to people who were canvassing before. Someone who is a registered democrat turns out to be a republican who wants to tie up the time of canvassers. I am an Obama supporter, and I've canvassed for him myself in the rush before the registration deadline, whenever I was approached by someone canvassing for Obama, I'd simply say to them "Thank you, I'm already registered to vote, and will be voting democratic," and that allows them to move on to someone who actually needs their time. Some republican supporters will argue with you and try to tie up your time so that you can't reach as many people that day.

Another tactic I've seen: A republican (well let's be honest some of us democrats do this to the other side as well) will pretend to be an undecided voter and engage you in a long conversation just to tie you up and keep you from moving on to a reaal undecided voter.

I wouldn't worry too much about her rants about Obama's thesis. She probably doesn't know what's in the thesis either. She's probably just repeating some lie she heard on some conservative talk show somewhere. You know that most repubs never have real facts to back their arguments.
