Republicans Ashamed of their Party (pix)

by Land of Enchantment
Mon Oct 13, 2008 at 09:51:30 AM PDT

After the 2006 midterm election, I posted a pictorial diary of all the Republican Senators and Congresscritters who'd been given the boot: Goodbye... and Good Riddance! When I was putting it together, I realized that some of the websites get scrubbed quickly. So I've started gathering material for a followup this year already, before the election.

And I noticed a funny thing. Looking at Republicans targeted by Red-to-Blue or Orange-to-Blue (etc.), they don't seem too eager to let people know what their party affiliation is. Check it out!

Independent? Buchanan is a Republican - one who barely got elected in 2006 - and is facing a hotly contested rematch with Christine Jennings. And he's not alone in trying to hoodwink the public into thinking he's "above" mere partisan party affiliation. Or, rather, in hiding from the GOP.

<...>

<...>

Holy crap! Another Independent! I'm starting to wonder if that's a new word for Republican. Definitely works that way for Lieberman...

<...>

Yet another independent! I guess most of 'em don't want to be mavericks, so they just stick to "independent".

<...>

much more

Republicans running away from Bush and McCain.

Edited to add: Demoralized Republicans

8. Charlie Dent
Will probably win re-election. I see houses with Obama signs and Dent signs. He also was "busy" the day McCain had is rally in Bethlehem

It doesn't help that locally we ran a very good person but not the greatest candidate with some scandals and a Hillary vs. Barack type primary election for Mayor 3 years ago that still have people mad at her. No Dent 2010 will be my personal project after this election if voter turnout doesn't remove him this year.

16. "reformer with results" was Rove's response to McCain (of all people) in 2000
Full circle:
In the speeches that preceded McCain's last night, the words reform or reformer came up no less than 11 times. But what it means is unclear. It does not appear to have much to do with campaign finance reform, immigration reform, reforming the selection and confirmation of judges -- all issues that McCain had something to do with and have helped define his career in the Senate. They have gone largely unmentioned in St. Paul, Minn., where many of the delegates fought him on each of those efforts. <...>

John Weaver, a former McCain aide and confidant, was less charitable: "It's whatever that viewer happens to believe is reform."

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2008/09/04/AR2008090403559.html?hpid=topnews

On Monday, Bush revealed a new slogan, one designed to wrest away McCain's maverick mantle -- "A Reformer With Results" the white-on-blue banners proclaim. <...>

"I look forward to explaining to people that I've got a record," Bush said, "I'm a reformer with results ... If you want somebody from outside of the system, if you want somebody who can't lay claim to being a chairman of an important Senate committee ... come and join this campaign."

I was watching football yesterday and he had at least four ads every half hour. One showing him with Ted Kennedy with the Matthew Shepherd hate crime bill and another one touting his vote in favor of funding for SCHIP, sandwiched between attack ads from a 527 directed against his opponent for being a "tax-raiser"

27. Yep.
I live in suburban Dallas and the republican signs used to have the word in BIG BOLD letters. This year? You can't even FIND the word "Republican." Not even on the freaky-deakiest of them.

Weird. I wonder why they don't want to identify themselves as Republicans anymore?

31. Here's another one from my district in South Florida
Republican Lincoln Diaz-Balart of Florida's 21st Congressional District doesn't identify his party either:

http://diaz-balart.house.gov/

However, I was disappointed to find that that his Democratic challenger, Raul L. Martinez, doesn't either. His site says "Our problems today do not have D’s or R’s next to them."

http://www.raul2008.com/

That's disheartening to someone like me who believes that our problems very definitely DO have R's next to them, but I guess I'll have to hold my nose and vote for him anyway. At least the ballots will be marked with the candidate's parties whether they like it or not.

38. This is their current modus operandi
It's been happening in local elections where I live (suburban Philly) for several years, and right now we have several "independent" candidates who are really Repukes. Our part of Montgomery County is strongly Dem (there are other parts of the County that are just the opposite). So, a Repub cannot win in a small area if they are honest about what they are. The problem is, they went and got themselves endorsed by the Republican party so all the slightly savvy voter has to do is go onto the county repub web site and look for their names. And the names will be there. So they try to hide it out in public but wear their colors proudly for the party faithful.

Moral: Always check up on an "independent" candidate. Look on party web sites, find out who their donors are.
