Salon: How John McCain could still win
<<The odds are long for McCain, but this is no time for Democrats to embrace irrational exuberance. Here are four ways McCain might be able to turn it around.>>

http://www.salon.com/opinion/feature/2008/10/13/obama/

<<Know when to fold them. There are Bush states that have slipped so far out of McCain’s grasp that it is folly to waste time and money campaigning in them. The classic example is Iowa, a state that Obama has been organizing since early 2007 and that helped propel him to the nomination. But there were McCain and Palin Saturday in the river town of Davenport, rallying the faithful from both sides of the Mississippi (Obama’s home state of Illinois lies on the opposite shore) in a classic lost cause.

But what if, confronted with his fast-fading fortunes, McCain dropped the hubris and concentrated his efforts on the battleground 2004 Bush states that he might still hold if everything broke right: Ohio, Indiana, Missouri, Virginia, North Carolina, Nevada, Colorado and Florida. That, of course, would leave McCain in a completely defensive posture — and shy of 270 electoral votes, unless he could bring in, say, Pennsylvania, from the 2004 Kerry map. But it would be a way to stabilize his flight path as he came in for a landing (McCain style) on a wing and a prayer.>>

...hey, I'm just the messenger here.

1. Sounds like a pretty sane plan....
thereby ensuring that the McPalin campaign will never do it;)

2. Problem is, McCain's not doing the right things
instead he's lurching from bad idea to bad idea.

4. It's awfully late for them to turn this completely around. Only a major national trend change can
save them.

6. They're saying McCain can win by, um, just barely pulling off wins where he needs to?
One Obama crack in the following list and Obama wins, right?
Ohio, Indiana, Missouri, Virginia, North Carolina, Nevada, Colorado and Florida

riiiight.

10. I don't think Obama will carry Missouri
Just too many racists in this state. Too many people who would never vote for a black president. It's not an entirely red state because of St Louis and Kansas City.

17. Either way MO goes, it'll be close, but here's the thing
McSame doesn't have a realistic shot of taking any Kerry states at this point, and he's having to fight like Hell just to keep the Bush states. The fact that MO is in play this late doesn't bode well for McSame -- same with North Carolina, and now Barack is (without trying) getting Georgia pretty close.

21. Lots of people have already voted either by early
voting or absentee. The country is in sad shape with people losing their homes and jobs and businesses daily. I could be wrong, but I doubt people will bet that if they vote for the same thing change will occur. It is in their best interest to take a chance on Obama and I think they know that!

22. The closest anyone came from this far back was HHH in '68.
But he distinctly broke away from LBJ on Vietnam in a speech he gave on Sept. 30th, in Salt Lake City. And he only managed to win 191 electoral votes as a result.

Yes, he made it close, but he still lost, and he had way more time than McCain.

Not saying it's impossible for McCain, but it's looking more unlikely all the time. I don't think the debate is going to change much even if Obama makes a genuine gaffe and McCain's running on all cylinders.

23. i hope we keep fighting as if we're
10 down

those states mentioned are ones where we've still got a narrow lead, aren't they?

nevada seems to keep flip flopping, for example

and i keep seeing conflicting data for Colorado

as someone said, for a GE, three weeks is an eternity, I wish the election were tomorrow
