Who's watching David Frum be a jerk to Rachel Maddow? |
|
Edited on Mon Oct-13-08 08:50 PM by ErinBerin84
I had to turn it off (I'll watch the rest of it on the rerun), but the interview started off really weird, with him accusing her of wasting the last 40 minutes with having a sarcastic tone. Rachel asked if he was equating her sarcasm and playfulness with calling Obama a terrorist, and he dismissed the question and said in a dickhead way "Well, that's not an excuse for your own failings..", or something like that...
I've seen the McCain spokeperson on Rachel Maddow, and Pat Buchanan, be more respectful toward her on her own program...what a dick. How does he get off criticizing her show, I bet this is the first time he's even seen any of it. She does have substantive discussion on policy (criticizing both Dems and Repubs)...he just really pissed me off, I had to turn it off before I broke my tv.

This from the asshole that coined the term 'axis of evil'.
This is one of those times I'm ready to reach into the TV and grab this smarmy fuck by the throat.

68. I wonder if Frum had ever really watched the show, or heard Rachel's radio show. |
|
I'm thinking not. I think Frum imagined that what he had heard about Maddow from wingnuts might be true.
And if you're wondering, what Wingnut World thinks of Maddow is (based on the occasional bits I've overheard online) some nasty, heavy-handedly sarcastic, bull-dykey bully. I think he was expecting some kind of jokey cartoon-violence volley back in return, rather than the dead-serious line of inquiry Maddow gave him.
Maddow can be incredibly funny when it's appropriate. When the discussion is about a campaign that's gone off the rails due to scapegoating and threats of violence, there's absolutely nothing "ha-ha" funny to be mined.

David Frum is a typical PNAC neo-con who remains totally in denial that their nitwit policy of bringing pro-western democracy to the Middle East has been an unmitigated failure. A failure that has contributed heavily to the crisis that our Republic now faces. What has not been emphasized nearly enough is the fact that John McCain was, not only an adherent of these failed policies, but has surrounded himself with the same architects who are fully responsible for having place our country in serious jeopardy.
Personally I am sick of these damn think tanks that are nothing more than propaganda mills. On the right all I hear is anti-labor, demonization of progressives, accusations of un-patriotism and character assassination of even members of their own party when anyone dares to challenge their failed policies such as Richard Clarke for example.

73. Forgetting Frum for a moment I don't like what is happening at MSNBC right now. |
|
Yes it is a pleasure to have someplace to go to listen to progressive ideas virtually the entire evening and it is obviously a response to Fox as so many people felt that coverage has been tilted too conservatively for years now.
But I don't think it is actually good for the national dialogue generally to have newspapers or television or radio stations that are "conservative" OR "liberal." I applaude especially Maddow for having the courage to have someone like Frum on and to not treat him rudely even if he does the same. I would like to see more guests on Matthew, Olbermann, Maddow who disagree with each other and debate in a civilized manner.

76. MSNBC produces two hours of liberal discussion five days a week |

Depending on the wind, Tweety might also be on our side. Other than that, MSNBC has the same crap that fills CNN and Fox News day after day.
I still see people (i.e. nuts) saying that Fox News is too liberal for their tastes. I don't think most people even know what liberal means at this point.

78. Matthews has plenty of right-wing tools on as guests of the show - |
|
some days, he even does a great job tearing them to pieces. Check out his interview with Eric Cantor, the Congressman from Virginia, if you want see Matthews at his best...

85. Facts are good. No argument there. I'm just saying that I could use more debate from guests... |
|
generally. Tweety has traditionally been someone who often says things that I don't like (although that hasn't been the case lately as I think even he can't ignore the absolute insanity of the wingnuts right now).
I don't like when the entire show is nothing but single guests confirming the hosts opinion or analysis. I don't believe it does progressives any long term good to get into an echo chamber. It is a way to gradually lose touch with reality over time and anyone, regardless of politics. It is great to have a guest by him/herself too--I'm not saying otherwise. Just that I don't want the evening to become an echo chamber for progressives and I would like to see experts that are coming from other than a political perspective of either party.

87. uh, Rachel specifically has people on her show to disagree with her. |
|
And she treats them in a much more respectful way than any of those other fake balance shows.

82. Fair point, but take Maddow off that short list... she's always tried to host opposing views |
|
in fact, it's been a regular bit to list the people who've been contacted from the RNC and elsewhere who "weren't able to make it". I think she wants them on, so long as they behave themselves. I think it's the right-wing that's too scared to make an appearance.
Anyway, I guess you're right--it's good that Frum was there, and I hope there are others, even if it makes for some tense moments.

She threw it right back in his face, asking him if what she did on her show was equivalent to righties calling for the death of Obama. He danced around that question like a rag doll.

Trotted out the "both sides are just as responsible for the nasty tone" meme and she tore him up and smiled while she did it. I love Rachel.
