I'm sure there are some folks voting for Obama based on the fact that he is very good looking. I have to admit, about 2% of my vote is for that reason. :D It doesn't hurt that you look like a model and also happens to be inspirational, smart, intelligent, down to earth, with an incredible life story and tremendous insight, empathy, and courage.

And also a Harvard Man.

Mama Dunham did good.

2. I really don't. If you look at him objectively, he's kind of ordinary looking.
The lines around his mouth aren't flattering and would keep him from getting a serious modelling job. The eyes & physical demeanor are also pretty cerebral. Like most thinkers, he pouts a bit while cogitating over things. Good models have that vacuous look, something that Obama utterly fails at.

Fasion model - never. Role model; model citizen; model leader - that's more like it.

4. real models look like shit half the time in person
It's not until photoshop, soap, and makeup hit them that they come together. But you have to have the foundation, and Obama has the foundation of a model.

5. The lines around his mouth are a natural result of being forty-seven years old
(very probably helped along by his years of smoking).

6. Also a result of him smiling a lot. Too many laugh lines on his face.
No agency would touch him. They'd say "Hey, smarty pants, go to law school instead!"

As soon as I saw this title, I thought, "Wasn't he on the cover of GQ?"

Anyway, personally, I think he is sexy, but I would vote for any true Democrat in his position right now. Even if he or she looked like this:

16. Actually, I think being too good looking can be a problem unless they have
a strong enough resume/enough talent to overcome the bias. It's not that I assume very good looking people are not qualified; it is just that I know so many that have gotten such a pass in life that I don't automatically assume that a very attractive person who is very successful earned what they got. I still expect them to prove to me that they are worth the standing they have.

So in my case, a resounding no. His extremely good looks are just another plus, but really had nothing to do with me choosing to support him. In fact, I thought he was slightly goofy looking before I decided to support him, but now I think he's incredibly handsome! :loveya:

29. I LOVE your "THAT ONE" avatar! As for Obama, he's better looking than McCain, but who isn't?
If someone with McCain's looks, and even his lesser intellect and other skills ran on Obama's politics and with Obama's integrity, I might rue the fact that my candidate had zero charisma (which my mom keeps telling me is true of Obama -- but even if he's not JFK, he's more charismatic than MOST politicians) but I'd still vote for the old fogey who was near the bottom of his class that was for the middle class and not just the elite, who REALLY cared about the environment, and recognized that we have to GET REAL AND GET OUT of Iraq over than well-spoken Harvard Grad blah blah blah.

So I guess even his RELATIVE charisma is NONdeterminative of my vote, but I'm sure glad we HAVE the stronger candidate.

It was Obama's quality of tending to grow on people, as distinct from Hillary Clinton and John Edwards (both of whom I'd support madly against McCain, again, even if McCain looked like JFK and Abraham Lincoln all rolled into one). Obama is I think the strongest candidate of the major ones that were running.

I don't see how the Repukes can win this one HONESTLY, but what we have to determine is whether they can win it DISHONESTLY, including by manipulating security issues and "emergencies", something I'm polling DUers about

36. Obama's beauty grows on you......
As it is not a standard photogenic model type of beauty, it is a beauty of mind, spirit and body that comes together and equals charisma, which is not the same as model pretty.

Just his smile alone and the thought of the state of the union for the next 8 years is enough to vote for the man over his opponent....not to mention the policies and ideology.

In the end, That one is all good! :)

44. GQ model? NO.
Vacuous model-type people with technically flawless faces and bodies are...kind of aesthetically pleasing, like a well-balanced Greek column or something, but totally forgettable scenery.

Imperfect but compelling people with distinctive, striking looks as well as brains, though.... :9

My dirty little secret is that I tend to get the hots for any male politician who speaks for me, eloquently and passionately. I like tall skinny dorky guys, I like older men, I like bookish nerds, I like idealists, I like rogues, I like dry wits.

So yes, Barack Obama is extremely attractive to me, and I'll physically enjoy voting for him (for the fourth time, I'm an ILan). But I also felt similarly about Kerry, and Gore, and B. Clinton. (I would've felt the same about H.Clinton were she the nominee, I'm not totally straight.)

But if you managed to come up with some Johnny Depp or Viggo Mortensen lookalike who was a right-winger, I would find them utterly unappealing. It's the WHOLE package that counts, and brains and soul and wit trump looks.
