I just want to thank Campbell Brown for pointing out that being Muslim should not be evil |
|
I don't love CNN and even Brown is not my favorite person but she called out the media and the voting public about how being Muslim is looked at as a horrible thing when it should not be. Anyone catch that tonight? She finally said what I've been thinking about lately, since when is being Muslim a bad thing? For calling out all the racists against moderate non violent Muslims tonight I say thank you Campbell.

5. Its so ridiculous, all this Muslim hating crap. |
|
Reminds me of the anti-asian sentiment after WWII. My Grandparents were very racist towards any Asian people because of all the hatred of the Japanese during that time. Its like after 9/11 Muslims became enemy # 1 here. We are spending billions of dollars in Iraq which McInsane says we need to see to "victory" and yet people at his rallies thing being a Muslim is a bad thing? Do they think us spending billions to topple a dictator and help Muslims there is a bad thing?

being a Jew in Nazi Germany pre-holocaust meant having your citizenship stripped. It meant laws that stripped Jews of virtually any rights. It meant physical persecution that went unpunished.
Here's a little mental exercise for you: Imagine Hitler holding a Seder to recognize Jews. Bush has held events recognizing Muslims. That is in no way a defense of bush, simply a recognition of two different constructs.
Here's another one: Imagine bush writing the equivalent of Mein Kampf, targeting Muslime. Again, different environment.
There is indeed discrimination against Muslims in this country. It must be fought vigorously, but it doesn't help to make spurious comparisons.

27. yeah but Jews were demonized first before they started changing the |
|
laws against them. There is a point at which the same type of thing starts to happen, so it makes sense to be vigilant by making comparisons of how the crap gets started.

29. Of course it makes sense to be vigilant, but |
|
and it's a pretty big but, it's been 7 years since 9/11. The type of demonization seen in Germany after 1932 has not manifested itself here. Comparisons are only useful when valid, and this one simply isn't. The social construct of Germany circa 1932-1938 is vastly different from the current day U.S.A. You actually hurt the cause of eliminating discrimination against Mulims by making this comparison.

It turns my stomach whenever McCain's followers would use that kind of rhetoric. If they say those nasty, racist things about Arabs (and Muslims), they will say the same for any person with brown skin.
I'm just counting the hours before someone shouts the n-word on camera while being at McCain/Palin's rallies.
What then will the MSM do? Slap McCain or Palin on the wrists as they have been doing? Or really humiliate them as they so deserve?

unit on the roots of Islam and the kids are really interested in it. This is a heavily Jewish area and I think it's great that the kids are so receptive to learning about the Muslim faith. 911 came up, and it was a good opportunity to talk about how a small minority can distort the true message of a religion.
If we are all going to peacefully co-exist on the only planet we inhabit, it's important that people are familiar with and learn to respect other cultures.
McCain's answer to the woman who called Obama an Arab the other day was pathetic. He missed a perfect opportunity to convey the message that there isn't anything wrong with being an Arab. His failure top do so spoke volumes about him and his party.

14. I have a friend who is Muslim |
|
She recently confided in me that she did not trust Obama, could not vote for him, because she feared he might secretly be a fundamentalist like the small group that has seized control of Iran.
How ironic, I thought. Here I am a former Southern Baptist voting for Obama, rejecting with contempt the Republican party platform, irate over the selection of Sarah Palin (right-wing fundamentalist to the extreme) and I AM VOTING FOR OBAMA.
Only in America ... Muslim won't vote for a Muslim, former Tennessean embracing same Muslim.

I could tell it was a slip-up from the way your thought process was running.
But your point is excellent; religion is immaterial. As I told my fundamentalist right-wing mother - I'm electing a President, not a Pope. He could be a Zoroastrian for all I care.

But I think I get your drift and will give you the benefit of the doubt here. If your friend has been pigging out at Faux News or the Hate Talk Radio slop bowl then she'd definitely be one of "them" in heart and mind.
For some, voting against our own best interest is a hard habit to break.

30. What a dumb remark I made - let me clarify |
|
Yes, I know he is not Muslim but even if he were, I would vote for him. I do trust people of all races, nationalities, etc., until I know I have a reason not to. So I should have said, I would have voted for him even if he were Muslim, unlike my Muslim friend. Doesn't pay to post so early you don't have your eyes open and your brain engaged. Thanks for politely pointing out my error and allowing me to correct it.

23. Oh, did Campbell actually speak up? I have been waiting for someone in the media to call these |

people on this nonsense. They seem to be functioning under the misconception that Islam=terrorist. It is sad, really. These are probably the same people who can not perceive the flawed logic in invading Iraq in order to take down the people responsible for 9/11 when all legitimate intelligence pointed to the people responsible for 9/11 being in Afghanistan. I swear, it is not rocket science but people can no longer deprogram themselves from the rhetoric of the administration and Faux news long enough to actually THINK. People are just turning into Elizabeth Hasselbeck clones. Hell, we even have one attempting to run for VP.
