Obama's won!
Edited on Tue Oct-14-08 12:06 AM by Drunken Irishman
Every four years, Scholastic Magazine publishes its results from their "student election". Kids get to vote for the presidential candidates and this year they chose Obama.

Why do I say Obama has won? Because Scholastic Magazine has predicted the winner in 15 of the last 17 elections.

That's pretty staggering odds.

Obama won 57-39, as well as won key swing states like Colorado, Florida, Iowa, Ohio and Pennsylvania.

The general belief is that children tend to follow their parents' lead when supporting a candidate.

2. Okay. McCain really is toast.
Kids are a GREAT barometer of their parents' political leanings.

My kids' classes had an "election" in '04. The ratio for both was about 24 Kerry to 2 or 3 Bush. Good old Portland. :)

5. This is a pretty big survey, 250,000 kids.
So it trumps even polls.

7. It would appear so. From the article:
Only twice since 1940 have their results been at odds with the nation's: in 1948, when Harry Truman defeated Thomas Dewey, and in 1960, when John F. Kennedy beat Richard Nixon. (To students' credit, their balloting closed before the televised Nixon-Kennedy debates that historians consider a game-changer.)

8. Yes. The last election they got wrong was 1960.
When the students chose Nixon over Kennedy. The article mentions it could be because the ballots were counted before the televised presidential debate that was widely believed to be a "game changer" for Kennedy.

12. this is the real deal
The best indicator of the vote.

It was spot on in 2004 and 2000.

It will be spot on this year imo.

13. Which 2 of the last 17 did they get wrong?
I couldn't find that info. If either of those was 200 or 2004, the kids' record is even better.

16. This election is odd in the fact that younger people tend to have kids and
McCain's voters tend to be older. That might throw things off a bit but its probably in the ballpark.

19. My 8 year old voted in that election!
For Obama, of course.

He goes to a private Christian school in Oklahoma, so it's probably no surprise that McCain won his class, but there ARE several other Obama supporters in his class. I think the percentages in his class are actually probably about on par with the rest of the state.

He will be so thrilled to know that his vote has been counted and that his guy won! ;-)

27. Same here. LOL
Of course I lived in a town with residents who still actively recruited for the KKK. My American Govt teacher was a flaming liberal though. He influenced me greatly in becoming interested in politics. Always argued with the Republican economics teacher across the hall, but always in a good-natured way.

Ah, high school. :)
