seen on the sign at Church today "Just because it's legal doesn't mean it's not a sin"
California and it refers to prop 8.

I'm having a really difficult time with "we can disagree without being disagreeable"

1. saw one on the way to the Oregon coast the other day: "The most powerful position in the world.....
is on your knees".

Wife and I got a kick out of that one.

8. I'm so sick of this narrow-minded shit!
If someone doesn't believe it's a sin, why they should they care if the church believes that? Especially if that someone isn't a believer in that church. Why can't these stupid people get that??? I guess that concept is really difficult for people who want to control everyone else. Fuck them!

10. My church sign says, "Now is the time for all good men....
.... to come to the aid of their country."

My father (who put it up there) conceeded that, while it was not original, it was the truth.

"Now, more than ever, we need to put our differences aside for the good of this nation."

Had folks in tears.

16. many of the churches here have come out for prop 8, some of my neighbors attend
a different church from the one with the sign but i don't think it's coincidence that 3 of them all put up "Yes on prop" signs on Sunday.

28. I wouldn't be surprised if they were passing them out with the collection plate.

The churches need to stay the fuck out of politics. Nobody's forcing them to conduct same-sex ceremonies, and no same-sex couple would want to have one in one of those churches, anyways. For the life of me, I can't understand why they're making such a stink.

30. it's distressing. One of my twice divorced neighbors with a yes on 8 sign asked
why i cared since i'm not gay, i was stunned and then i told him no he couldn't borrow the power tool he came over to get, he then went on to tell how he respects the institution of marriage "being one man one woman" and i said yes i can see that since you've been married 3 times already.

14. What's problematic there?

That is entirely the point - that the peculiar moral code of one group does not define the law.

They are entitled under the Constitution to despise anyone they choose. What they cannot do is to interfere with the lives and rights of those whom they don't like.

It is fortunate that people like this have a tendency to conveniently identify themselves, so that decent people do not make the mistake of associating with them.

I don't buy the "disagree without being disagreeable" thing. You don't have to "tolerate" me, like me, accept me, and so forth. You can sit on your porch and say, "I really hate you" every time I walk by on the sidewalk, if you want. But you cannot get up and actually *do* anything to me as a consequence of that hate.

17. Only that the church is likely sending a coded condemnation of homosexuality...
...rather than advocating for halting the war or banning corporate lobbying. And urging people to use their particular moral code to suppress rights rather than to secure them.

But that's legal, of course. :D

23. Note I was careful about the distinction between "saying" and "doing"
Edited on Tue Oct-14-08 10:43 AM by jberryhill
They can say whatever they want. They don't have to send a "coded condemnation" of anything. They can, if they want, go full-Phelps with "God hates fags" if they want to.

Over the long run, they only find themselves in their own shrinking circle of marginalizing ugliness.

I like your last line, though. Yes, even though what they are doing is legal, it is indeed a sin. The ultimate irony.

18. Just because it's a sin (in their minds) doesn't mean it should be illegal.
We'll never convince those idiots that it's NOT a sin. But we MIGHT be able to convince them that the country cannot outlaw every supposed sin.

Also, just because heterosexual marriage is legal doesn't mean it's sanctified. That legal document doesn't confer righteousness on anybody, nor does it confer God's blessing.

26. If God wanted to force his rules on us all...
He would have.

Damn so-called Christians sure aren't very Christ-like!

There is not one scripture that says "God's law" should be forced down the throats of everyone. If we allowed that to happen, then we'd have to also include Jewish laws (and there are far more of them than there are Christian laws) as well as Muslim laws. What's good for one is good for all.
