My wife said Sunday," Why can't we change the Constitution,
and elect Obama President for 3 or 4 terms."
Worked great for FDR, and would really make republicans nuts.

Why or why not?

1. If we get a super majority in Congress and state legislatures, we could.
If enough Democrats are elected in state legislatures across the nation, and we have a strong Democratic majority in Congress, we could get a lot of good things done. National health insurance would be first on my list.

3. Would you like to see * president for 3 or 4 terms?
Works both ways.

George Washington set the precedent for two-terms, FDR was just the first one to break that precedent. If it wasn't for that amendment, then you'd have Chimpy running for a 3rd term, and we've already seen how he stole the first two elections.

10. I'd like to see him try
Anyway, without the term limits, we'd still have Clinton in office.

4. Takes an act of God to change the Constitution, pretty much.
And let's face it--we don't know what kind of Prez Obama will be yet.

5. Obama is certainly young enough to do it but
many people are leery of ever letting that happen again. Too much power in one person's hands for too long, though I don't think someone like Obama would abuse it.

6. As much as I like Obama,
these sorts of tinkerings with term limits show how democracy becomes compromised in other countries. Extending power for a few more years requires the ruling power to silence opposition and take control of the constitutional process in a radical way. Moreover, any change would beenfit republicans. Three or four terms of Obama would be nice, but any change probably would not apply to him (nor should it). Instead, we might end up with three or four terms of a disastrous Christ presidency.

7. Because sometime in the future, if we are unlucky
we could end up with another Bush, or worse, in office, and THEY will be able to reign forever.

The Constitution is sacred, we should not mess with it except to expand civil rights when the need arises.

JMHO.

8. If a Constitutional Convention meets, it could change anything it wants.

Far too dangerous to ever do.

9. Amending the Constitution is a slow, complex process,
as it should be. "We" can't amend it; it has to go through Congress and be ratified by the states.

12. like your passion but NO, please!
Obama would be the first to say no way to this, as he is a constitutional lawyer.

we need to restore our constitution; esp the three arms of government/ our checks and balances. Get rid of the partisan DoJ all together and start over (no other way of cleaning out that fundy mess). As great as Obama is going to be, the democratic process is what built this country and what leaders like him will ensure continues.

As in, no more election fraud, for one.

13. If second terms are "Lame Ducks" ...then why does it not make sense to remove the Lame Duck Factor?

I think term limits are stupid .. it is anti democratic ..

The incumbent should face a primary and people can choose who they want..

What is wrong with it?

14. No term limits for anyone.......
Term limits are not actions against incumbents. They were designed against voters, who, it was claimed, foolishly voted for the "wrong" people.

The Twenty Second Amendment (presidential term limits) was an act of retrospective vengeance against Franklin Delano Roosevelt, by a Republican Congress and enough Republican state legislatures to ratify the amendment in 1946.

Term limits anywhere are wrong. They limit voting rights and elections and NOT incumbents.

Defenders of term limits will insist that there has to be a way to prevent voters from electing the "wrong people".

15. Because the Constitution wasn't changed for FDR
There was no official term limit on the presidency until FDR was elected to 4 terms. After that the Constitution was amended.

16. I'd rather see six year term, one only. No re-election campaign.
The first term is spent running for re-election as it is now. THAT is why we have the permanent campaigns.

One six year term only.
