Interesting comparison, GOP operatives downplay Time poll
I was watching the cable news yesterday and John Fund, a Wall Street contributer and solid Republican, said he doesn't like to comment on only one poll. That he likes to see other polls to confirm a trend, because one poll may not be accurate. Then he said "I would never bet against John Kerry" in summing up what he thinks the state of the election is right now.

Then on another network, Bush campaign person Racicot (spelling may be wrong) also downplayed the poll, and said they (Bush team) always knew and still think the election will be very close.

1. I heard the same thing
and I think it's because they don't want to explain why * is down 10 points when other polls come out. No way is this 11 point lead correct, and they know it.

2. I don't believe a poll taken during the heat of a covention ever.
One of those flash polls taken during the Dem convention in 1984 showed Mondale ahead, not by much, but still ahead while those taken a few days later showed him 9 to 11 points behind.

9. I'm hearing impaired can't hear the radio.
And if I mute the tv I have closed captioned so it doesn't matter.

The poll thing has just been running on the ticker at the bottom of the screen. I can always smack some tape across that sucker. ;)

15. Tom Ridge is a big supporter of the use of duct tape!
Now we know how to properly apply it in our efforts to fight terra,
tape the bottom of your screen because the only true terraists are the media and the terra they spread, trying to destroy our psyche!

Use the duct tape, available in assorted colors, depending on the color of your t.v., you can even use it to decorate!

17. Their internal polling may not be reflecting what the Time
poll shows. I'm waiting for Gallup I assume tomorrow. Its been attacked here but no one less than Greg Sosnick said it has the best methodology. better than Zogby.

8. Well, CUT the cable!
Why do cable people pay for right-wing crap? Do they like to be aggravated regularly? Do they have an excess of money that they want to lose?

Cut the cable and ditch those right-wing goons and their trickery and lies.

5. There is some game getting played
I would not trust anything John Fund said as far as I could throw them

There views are always suspect, even though it appears they are saying something we may agree with, there is a reason...

7. I agree that something is not right
One thing that crossed my mind is if they let * seem to have a comfortable lead, some of his supporters might not bother to vote, and of course, maybe they are preparing for the upcoming poles.

6. My guess
We all know that the electorate is divided pretty evenly. Just as it was inevitable that Bush would get a bounce out of the convention (though obviously different polls are showing different results), it is inevitable that the numbers will start to even out again over time.

It's possible that the GOP want to play down the Time poll because when Bush sinks back down to 47 from 52 and Kerry goes up from 41 to 47, it's going to look like Kerry is the one with momentum going forward to the election. If that happens, the Kerry campaign will need to milk it for all it's worth.

13. Wouldn't such a poll have to be limited to people who actually
watched the convention? It would pretty much favor the Republican candidate because their followers are the ones watching for this most part.

14. They probably don't want their supporters to get too confident
Because then people will be less likely to donate and maybe even less likely to come out and vote. Unless the results of an election are almost 100% clear going into it, it is to both candidates' advantage to keep it looking as close as possible, to motivate donors, volunteers, and voters.
