"You Stole Our Obama Sign" = A clever answer |
|
From the Author; "Someone stole our Obama for President sign from our yard last night. They stole nearly all the Obama signs in our neighborhood. The ones they didn't take they spray-painted black. So I made this sign today and staked it in the yard. I fully expect it to be trashed by morning. At least they know the result of their pranks: we give more money to Obama's campaign." Stealing yard signs is like writing on the bathroom wall...just too low.
I do have an urge, I must admit, to print up some medium size stickers that say "RATED 93rd OUT OF 100" or just "93rd" and stick them on Elizabeth Dole signs I see here in NC. It's not really vandalism, just an enhancement.
But of course I don't do that.

59. there's more than one motive for that |
|
In my town there's talk of Obama supporters stealing signs because they're so hard to get and they want them for themselves. The store downtown that had them for a while ran out again yesterday.

64. I'm sorry but I can't buy that explanation. I don't know one Obama supporter who would steal a sign |
|
At one point a whole pile of them were found a little out of town in a ditch damaged. It takes us for ever to get more signs here in La Grande, Oregon. But every one buys another one when they do come in. I just tell everyone to wear their pins because they can't steal those! I have 60 signs arriving in a few days and I'm putting them everywhere as the mail in ballots go in the mail on Friday. It just makes me laugh. Poor sports those republicans!

It was a real conversation I overheard in a campaign office, but it was said in jest.
All day every day people come into the local Obama office taking our time by asking for lawn signs even though there's a notice on the door that the sign-shoppers admit to having read saying the office does not have them and that they should go down the street to the store that did have them -- until they sold out again. However, those conversations are also good -- people come in and ask for signs as an excuse, but often they can then be talked into phone banking etc.
Much better yet is to go door to door, encouraging sporadic democrats to get out and vote, or at least supporting such efforts, as I try to do.
Having said all that, it moves me to tears to drive through all the neighborhoods around here with Obama signs on almost every lawn, especially after long days struggling with data and the inevitable conflicts that arise in my volunteer team. Those wonderful blue signs give me heart!
So thank you!

"Victims" keep coming into our Obama office to buy replacement signs, and I've recommended that they make their own sign and post this message:
Dear Republicans:
If you steal our sign again, we will just buy another one. That means even more money will be going to the Obama campaign.
Thank you for your contribution!

In this day of cheap webcams, I would'nt want to be a vandal of any kind. ANYBODY can set up surveillance on all four sides of their house, with 24x7 monitoring to a hard drive, for about $200 + freeware.
Motion-detector activated solar-powered floodlights are cheap too.
Just set this stuff up, especially if a raft of it is happening in your 'hood, and press charges when they are caught.

40. how to stop sign stealing |
|
Edited on Wed Oct-15-08 02:37 PM by azureblue
1- Get a tube or can of roofing tar. The patch type is best because it flows better and stays gooey longer. Put a bead of it on the frame of the sign, or the back. Since it is black, it won't be visible at night. The stuff is messy- it takes kerosene to remove it. It will get all over the thief's hands, his clothes, his steering wheel, and can leave clear fingerprints if he touches anything flat.
2- get some stakes and small wire- single strand wire works great. Put the stakes in a circle around the sign and the attach the wire to each stake, then to the sign itself. Run the other end of the wire into the house or a box. the sign thief will not know if the wire is electrified or a trip wire for an alarm or camera.

Be careful of laws if you "boobytrap" your sign in any way.
At the very least, put up a "No Trespassing" sign in front of the Obama sign, although, depending on the jurisdiction this may or may not buy protection.
We all know how republicans hate lawyers, except when they feel that they are a victim .... they feel like a victim 100% of the time if one of their idols aren't in Total Control. They'll sue in a microsecond if their fat, worthless asses get scratched.

...they sell battery-powered motion sensors that sound an alarm when said motion is detected...and best of all they are available with the sound of a shotgun blast. Wouldn't that be special. Now if they could include the sound of a pump-action just prior to the blast, you might very well have some DNA left in your front yard as well.

patched thru an amp ...then again we have a pump 12g, shoot off in the air of course. An old favorite of farmers where I grew up was loads of bacon rind and rock salt. I have used that before but it was a more dangerous prop the kkkonservatives were trying to set up and light a cross on my yard, if they had succeeded it would have burnt my home too, as the front yard was about 6x6feet.

75. That's cool but I wish when people made signs like this they would say "Somebody" instead of "You". |

I always get offended when I read a sign like this. I feel like I'm being personally accused by a crazy person. That's just a minor complaint but I have a lot of crazies in my neighborhood who post weird signs like this. "You stole my garbage can" or "You're driving too fast" etc.
The reasoning behind the sign is funny and right on though.

I like the roofing tar idea.
Another good one is protecting signs from vehicles with U-channel posts. Cut to extend 20" above ground, they'll protect boulevard signs from car doors. Cut a little shorter and they'll cost the vandal a new exhaust system when they try to driver over. 11-12" works well for most cars. If you have lots of rednecks (pickup trucks), go longer.
