My Sister and Bro-in-law are the Chairpersons of AIP. I've mined gold with them, and Knew Joe Vogler, the founder.

I don't recall any plastic explosives, but I DO know that he was a miner, and they had access to explosives for mining. He wasn't a bomb throwing type, and a fairly nice guy, except for the wacky Secessionist bullshit. I used to argue with them, but most of them would give you the shirt off their backs if you needed help.
