Conversation with yet another colleague who believes Obama is Muslim!
I'm completely amazed by this. I was talking this morning with a colleague. A little background...she's a nun who works at a local parish. She lives in a monastery (you and I call them convents, they call it a monastery) with no TV which doesn't take a newspaper. So this morning she asked me who I liked in the election. She was actually asking for guidance in making her decision.

So, I tell her I'm voting for Obama, and give her several reasons why. She proceeds to tell me that she's nervous about voting for him. Someone told her he's Muslim, and that he was sworn in on the Quran. Another person actually gave her the book _Obamanation_ and she read it (but the monastery doesn't take a newspaper, where she could get actual NEWS!! :grr:). She said it was "very well researched". I asked her to notice how many times the author's footnotes point to books or articles he himself has written, and told her no legitimate researcher does such a thing. And I had to assure her that Obama is a Christian, that he spoke at my church's General Synod last year, because he's a member of our church!! Also had to assure her that he's a citizen (and add that McCain was born in Panama, for good measure).

Finally, I told her the same thing I said to a Baptist colleague who admitted to not watching the news or reading newspapers (where do these people find sermon illustrations?!)..."Please! If you don't know what's going on, if you need other people telling you who to vote for...DON'T VOTE!! Yes, citizens are obligated to vote, but we're also obligated to make informed choices. And to do that, we need to be aware of the news. Really! Just don't vote!!!"

I'm afraid she will, though. I just hope I opened her eyes, and maybe even her mind.

2. This is why they think Barack is a muslim
All propaganda must be popular and its intellectual level must be adjusted to the most limited intelligence among those it is addressed to. Consequently, the greater the mass it is intended to reach, the lower its purely intellectual level will have to be. But if, as in propaganda for sticking out a war, the aim is to influence a whole people, we must avoid excessive intellectual demands on our public, and too much caution cannot be extended in this direction.

The receptivity of the great masses is very limited, their intelligence is small, but their power of forgetting is enormous. In consequence of these facts, all effective propaganda must be limited to a very few points and must harp on these in slogans until the last member of the public understands what you want him to understand by your slogan. As soon as you sacrifice this slogan and try to be many-sided, the effect will piddle away, for the crowd can neither digest nor retain the material offered. In this way the result is weakened and in the end entirely cancelled out.

5. Geez, I mean I don't want to be cool and coin the phrase "red-neck nun"
...but how on earth can these people teach and empathize with people if they have no idea what is happening in our society?

6. I hate that so many people think being Muslim disqualifies someone
I'm not a fan of organized religion but everyone should be allowed to practice want ever religion they want. It's not fair to single out one religion and discriminate against them. I don't know how, after 2 years of running for president, people could still think he's a Muslim.

10. I agree. I did tell her that there's nothing wrong wtih being Muslim or with being sworn in
using a Quran if one is a Muslim. But Obama doesn't happen to be a Muslim. I know, because he's UCC...like me!

8. Show her the story about this Catholic Nun:
106-year-old Obama-supporting nun shocked by fame

Sister Cecilia Gaudette, born on March 25, 1902, has decided to step out of the limelight and back into the comfortable obscurity that characterized her life before the media discovered that she will be one of the oldest Americans to vote.

"Sister Cecilia is tired, she is startled and she is even a bit anguished by all the attention," Sister Carmen Aymar, a deputy superior general at the convent in Rome where the voting nun lives, told Reuters by phone.

"Now she wants to be left alone," Aymar said.

After Gaudette appeared on CBS News in the United States and on BBC radio saying she was voting for the first time since 1952 and that it would be for Obama, the convent was besieged by calls from reporters and media outlets across the world.

"I'm encouraged by Senator Obama," she told the BBC. "I've never met him, but he seems to be a good man with a good private life. That's the first thing. Then he must be able to govern."

9. In reference to Obama, "Muslim" = the N-word
That's what they all really mean when they say "Muslim." I dare any of them to deny this.

11. "Someone told her he's Muslim, and that he was sworn in on the Quran."
People seem to be mixing up Barack Obama with Keith Ellison of Minnesota (who wasn't actually "sworn in" on the Q'ran or any other religious text, just like his fellow Congressmen).

14. Exactly what I told her. It seems Keith Ellison has morphed into Obama or vice versa.
Also told her that Ellison is my brother's Congressman, and people in his district seem to love him!
